Bleacher Report Bans Blech Sports Clichés in Football, Hockey, Basketball

Martin AveryMar 13, 2009

Bleacher Report writers watch a lot of sports on television and listen to a lot of games on the radio.

They do not wish to disrespect their colleagues but they do want to stop the use of clichés.

While acknowledging it is easier to avoid over-used phrases in writing than while speaking, live, on radio or television, the writers wish to preserve their sanity, therefore, the following clichés are now forbidden:

All Sports

·         He always gives 110 percent;

·         We're taking it one game at a time;

·         They have to stay focused;

·         There’s no " I " in TEAM;

·         Defense wins championships;

·         Records are made to be broken;

·         Our opponents are a great team;

·         We've got to take this season one game at a time;

·         We're looking forward to the challenge ahead of us;

·         They've been red-hot.

Hockey

·         They have to find a way to put the puck in the net;

·         When you put the puck on the net, good things are going to happen;

·         They're getting beaten to the puck;

·         They're buzzing around the net;

·         They're peppering the goaltender;

·         He lit the lamp;

·         He put the biscuit in the basket;

·         He found the twine;

·         He beat him through the five hole;

·         The goalposts are a goalie's best friends.

Basketball

·         They play an exciting brand of basketball;

·         They play above the rim;

·         They move well without the ball;

·         They need to dominate the boards;

·         They need to dominate the paint;

·         They're shooting well from downtown;

·         He has the hot hand;

·         They can't find their range;

·         They've been throwing up bricks;

·         Ten seconds is like an eternity.

Football

·         The road to the Super Bowl goes through Miami;

·         They have to establish their running game;

·         They have to take care of the football;

·         They have to stick to their game plan;

·         They should throw their game plan out the window;

·         That kick splits the uprights;

·         They're looking at third down and forever;

·         They're trying to milk the clock;

·         The defense is showing blitz;

·         It all depends on where they spot the ball.
