Andrew Luck vs. RG3: Re-Visiting Top Rookie QB Debate After Week 8

Chris TrapassoOct 28, 2012

Maybe it's been the commercials.

Maybe it was winning the Heisman Trophy or demonstrating his elite speed at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine that played a role.

Maybe it was the way he went down to New Orleans and upset Drew Brees and the Saints in Week 1, while throwing for 320 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and striking an iconic pose after being knocked down on his first TD pass.

In nearly every way imaginable, Robert Griffin III has surpassed Andrew Luck, the guy everyone said was the most polished quarterback prospect since Peyton Manning,

While Luck certainly hasn't disappointed to begin his NFL career—not at all—RGIII is the rookie signal-caller everyone can't stop talking about.

Heading into Week 8, the general consensus was that Griffin III was the better and more-promising quarterback than the 2012 No. 1 overall pick.

Frankly, that general consensus was correct. But after Week 8, who's now the better signal-caller?

To start the year, Griffin III was decidedly better from a statistical perspective. Also, he's obviously a much more dynamic athlete than Luck and can hit the huge play with his legs. However, Luck is fresh off a 297-yard performance in an overtime win on the road, while Griffin III was handled by Pittsburgh in a 27-12 loss on the road.

Over the last three games, Luck has averaged 254.3 yards through the air while RG3 has averaged 206. As far as total yards during that span, Luck has averaged 267, and Griffin III has averaged 284.

More importantly, Luck's Colts are 2-1, RG3's Redskins are 1-2.

So, right now, I can't say Luck has been more impressive, but he is undoubtedly closing the gap on a guy that's become one of the most publicized players in the NFL.

What say you?
