Boise State Bronco Defense: Stronger and More Talented Than Ever
Sure Boise State lost a lot of talent this past year due to graduation, but never in the history of the BSU program have there ever been so many qualified candidates ready to fill the void.
Top quality Broncos just keep coming, almost as if there never were a void to begin with. That wouldn’t happen if it were not for the quality of coaching staff at BSU.
New linebacker coach Jeff Choate is a prime example. Choate says his defense needs only two new faces in a couple of places.
Indeed Billy Winn has secured his spot with fast aggressive play, and that is the direction coach Choate is taking the Broncos. According to Choate, the defensive spin requires a few players to step up, and be more aggressive, etc.
Hunter, White, and Aaron Tevis will be expected to expand on their play from last season. As for middle line backer Derrell Acrey, he will also be expected to show some seasoning.
Choate thinks that possibly one of the recruits will play as a true freshman, which may very well be John Michael Davis. He is a strong linebacker who loves to hit, and could step right in and claim that one open place.
Coach Choate said that the 15 practice sessions for spring ball should stipulate who will step up, and what players will likely fill the two positions. The one position is Powers' slot, the third safety/linebacker for the nickel.
The second position of special need is middle linebacker. That position, Davis should have no problem claiming. We will see though, it's not like the Broncos are not knee deep in talented defensive stars.
Choate said he would be making a decision between 15 candidates. Indeed, those starters, second, and third string athletes would no doubt start on many teams today, even many BCS.
Boise State is truly blessed to have the quality of athletes and individuals they have signed. To date, that truly is the bottom line, and that’s what wins games; taking committed quality players and teaching them to recognize weaknesses.
Coach Choate will be able to instruct and motivate these Broncos because his forte is defense, and the young coach will be hungry to show his coaching stock. Whenever you see Choate at practice, or on highlight's, he always brandishes a huge smile.
Choate is a confident man. He gets the job done.
Choate is finally in his house and watch how fast the bids come for him once the Broncos get back to the BCS.
Could it be this year?
I think so, but next year for sure. Enjoy the ride fans. Go Broncos!
