Spielman grew up in a football family, as his father, Charles "Sonny" Spielman, was a high school football coach. His brother, Rick, took a different road to the NFL, serving as a scout and front-office man since 1990. He started out with the Detroit Lions and is currently the general manager of the Minnesota Vikings.
Spielman starred as an all-around, do-everything player at Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio, and then at Ohio State.
He then played in the NFL on three teams (Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns) from 1988 until 1999. He was drafted by the Lions in the second round in 1988 and spent the majority of his career in Detroit.
His career was ended in 1999 before that season even began when he suffered his second neck injury.
Spielman was known as a relentless player who never gave up a single inch on the field, but he was better known as a devoted family man who took a season off to take care of his wife, Stephanie, who was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Stephanie Spielman fought and beat breast cancer four times before it ultimately claimed her life on its fifth arrival.
This is a story of a football life, told by the masters at NFL Films. Don't miss it on Oct. 31, 2012, and make sure you bring your tissues, folks, because this one is a tear-jerker.
