San Francisco Giants' Pablo Sandoval Makes World Series History

Jordan BallJun 2, 2018

Game 1 of the World Series.

A time where athletes experience human-like symptoms, such as butterflies in their stomachs and a bad case of the jitters, in front of a bigger audience than they are used to.

No one could blame Giants' hitters for being a little extra nervous, knowing that they were facing the reigning AL Cy Young winner and MVP Justin Verlander.

Pablo Sandoval, however, experienced none of these things.

In fact, it only took the Kung Fu Panda one pitch, which he surprisingly took for a strike, to be ready to go. The free-swinger took a big hack at the next pitch, fouling it off, and then took an even bigger hack at the third pitch he saw from Verlander, sending the pitch deep to center.

The long ball traveled 421 feet, Sandoval's longest of the season at the time. It also put the Giants on the board 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

The Giants third baseman stepped into the box again in the third inning, leaving it in similar fashion. After seeing two pitches again from the flamethrower, Pablo poked one over the left field wall. The opposite field home run scored himself and Marco Scutaro, putting the team up 4-0.

Due up in the fifth inning, Verlander was relieved of facing Sandoval again by Al Alburquerque, who fell prey of the Panda also.

Just like the previous two at-bats, Sandoval saw two pitches and then unhinged on the ball, sending this one 435 feet and over the center field wall. This mammoth homer replaced his first as the longest of the season. It also put made him the second player in AT&T Park's 12-year history to record a three home run game.

That's a minor feat compared to the other club he joined on this night. By swatting three dingers, Sandoval joined the company of Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols as the only players in MLB history to hit three blasts in a World Series game.

Pablo came up to the plate once more, this time in the seventh, in which he singled, making him a perfect 4-4 on the night. With four hits and three home runs, he tallied five RBI, making him responsible for all but three of the Giants' eight runs.

And this was only Game 1.
