Top 5 Most Boneheaded Plays, Calls, and Quotes of NFL Week 7
The greatest reality show in the world is the NFL.
You get heartbreak, as seen in the Tampa Bay and New Orleans matchup.
Edge of your seat drama, as displayed in the Redskins and Giants nail-biter.
The unpredictability, like the 10.5-point underdog New York Jets going into Foxborough and taking the Patriots to overtime.
Last, and by no means least, the NFL provides us with characters that will say the most inexplicable things on camera, such as our good friends David Wilson and Cam Newton.
Here are the boneheaded actions and quotes from Week 7 that left us both bewildered and incredibly entertained.
#5 Christian Ponder's Egregious Interception
1 of 5On third-and-short, with a 14-7 lead from his own 15-yard line, Christian Ponder decided to pay homage to onetime Vikings rental quarterback Brett Favre.
Pressured by a flurry of Arizona Cardinals, Ponder decided against the safe and logical decision of taking a sack.
Instead, he rolled to his left and floated a pass directly into the hands of Cardinals linebacker Sam Acho. This boneheaded piece of quarterbacking gave the Cardinals a gift-wrapped field goal in Minnesota territory.
Fortunately for the Vikings and their young quarterback, Jay Feely missed the ensuing 47-yard field goal.
Crisis averted for Ponder this time, but mental lapses such as these lose games in the NFL more times than not.
#4 David Wilson Compares Himself to Birth Control
2 of 5David Wilson, a rookie running back for the New York Giants, has accumulated 87 yards on 15 carries this season.
Leading up to this weekend's game vs. the Washington Redskins, the confident third-string rookie told New York reporters that he believes himself to be a future Hall-of-Famer.
One must commend the young man's confidence. However, this was not the pick of Wilson's comments.
"I'm like birth control. You have to believe in me. Like birth control, 99.9 percent of the time, I'm going to come through for you."
After this delightfully bizarre quote, David Wilson failed to receive a carry in New York's victory against the Redskins.
#3 Cardinals Go for It on 4th-and-2
3 of 5The Cardinals vs. Vikings Week 7 matchup featured two 4-2 NFC teams, yet may have been the most boring game of the week.
On the bright side, the game featured two of the five head-scratching moments of this weekend. Down 21-7 with 7:45 left in the third quarter, the struggling Arizona offense decided to attempt a 4th-and-2 on Minnesota's 18 yard-line.
On the surface this doesn't sound too boneheaded, but bear with me.
The Arizona Cardinals have a top-five defense. In this game, they held the Vikings' passing attack to a lousy 52 yards.
With so much time left in the game, the Cardinals have to take the points here. Trust your top-ranked defense and have faith that the opposition's dismal offense won't score the rest of the game—which it didn't.
Instead, the Cardinals went for it. They ran a botched bootleg with John Skelton, whose lack of speed makes Tom Brady look like Usain Bolt, resulting in negative yards and surrendering the ball back to Minnesota.
The decision to go was boneheaded and, to add insult to injury, the play call itself was equally foolish.
I know the argument here: What if the Cardinals converted? Sure, then the decision may warrant chants of genius, but taking the points never receives negative backlash.
The Cardinals eventually lost the game by seven, but had they taken the field goal earlier in the third quarter, who knows how the rest of the game might have played out.
#2 Cam Newton Takes Shots at Coaches
4 of 5You have to feel for Cam Newton.
In the span of a year he has gone from adored to maligned. The energetic quarterback is operating with a crippled offensive line and a lackluster set of offensive weapons.
His squad has limped to a 1-5 record out of the gate, including a tough loss Sunday to the Cowboys.
Following the game, Cam delivered a gem of a press conference. He answered questions lethargically, with a pouting "Do I really have to talk to the press?" face.
When asked about the play calling, Cam threw his coaches under the bus more accurately then any pass to his receivers during the game:
"It's the same script, same director, its kind of getting boring." Newton said, adding later, "Something needs to change."
Not exactly the way you want your franchise quarterback to sound after a tough loss.
#1 Browns Jump Offsides.
5 of 5Let me set the scene for you.
It's late in the second quarter, the Colts have the ball at their own 23. Andrew Luck and his offense remain on the field facing 4th-and-1.
Each of the 64,560 fans filling Lucas Oil Stadium know what the Colts are doing. They've seen it before countless times.
While running the clock down, Luck will try to get the defense to jump offsides using a hard count and when the play clock ticks to one second he will signal for a timeout.
But the Colts were playing the Browns, and of course, that's not what happened.
Rookie defensive lineman Billy Winn fell for the oldest bluff in football and jumped offsides, giving the Colts a cheap first down.
This is the Cleveland Browns in 2012. They finished the game with nine penalties for 75 yards, suffering their fifth loss of the season. Fear not Browns Fans, you have a young rookie quarterback who will blossom with experience and age.
Oh, wait...
