Don Cherry and the 6 Biggest Off-Ice Celebrities in the NHL

Nicholas GossJun 3, 2018

The NHL has many off-ice celebrities who star in the television, film and music industries.

When the Los Angeles Kings were on their way to a Stanley Cup title last season, we saw many celebrities visit the Staples Center to watch the team play, but there are celebrity fans in every NHL city.

Let's look at the NHL's biggest off-ice celebrities.

Will Arnett

Like many Toronto Maple Leafs fans, Will Arnett has never seen his team lift the Stanley Cup, but that hasn't stopped him from proudly displaying his love for the Original Six team.

Arnett was born in Toronto and is one of Canada's biggest television stars thanks in large part to his success on Arrested Development. He also played a part in the movie Blades of Glory alongside Will Ferrell.

When you think of Hollywood celebrities who are die-hard hockey fans, Arnett is usually one of the first names that comes to mind.

Carrie Underwood

One of the most recognizable off-ice NHL celebrities from the music industry is country star Carrie Underwood.

Underwood has attended several Nashville Predators games over the last year to watch her husband Mike Fisher play.

He has played 99 games for the Predators following a trade that sent him to Nashville after he spent many seasons with the Ottawa Senators.

Fisher currently has one more year left on his current contract with the Predators, so if the NHL lockout ends soon, we could see Underwood at more Predators games this season.

Vince Vaughn

There are many celebrities who are Chicago Blackhawks fans, but the one that stands out the most is Vince Vaughn, who was also seen at the 2012 Stanley Cup Final in Los Angeles.

Since the Blackhawks are once again an elite team, expect to see more of Vince Vaughn at the United Center over the next several years, especially during the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Vaughn has starred in many successful movies, including one of the better sports movies of the last decade, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. He also played a huge role in the 2004 film Anchorman, which is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.

The 42-year-old actor is one of the biggest NHL fans in Hollywood right now.

Wayne Gretzky

Much like NBA legends Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky is still one of the biggest NHL celebrities even though he's no longer a player, coach or owner in the NHL.

The Great One is a star wherever he goes and has the most recognizable name in the sport. You don't even have to be a hockey fan at all to know who Gretzky is and understand how significant of a player he was.

Gretzky is still close to the sport and will be one of the NHL's biggest off-ice celebrities for the rest of his life.

Matthew Perry

The former Friends star is one of the most famous television actors of the last 20 years and is a huge fan of the NHL.

He attended quite a few Los Angeles Kings games last season and was thrilled when the team finally captured its first Stanley Cup championship.

Since he was born in Massachusetts, seeing the Boston Bruins end their own Stanley Cup drought in June of 2011 was probably a special moment for him too.

Perry is one of many Kings fans who hopes that the current work stoppage can end as soon as possible so the team's title defense can finally get underway.

Don Cherry

Whether you like Don Cherry or not, the star of CBC's Coach's Corner, which has been a staple of Hockey Night in Canada for many years, is the most popular media personality in hockey.

He's entertaining, never shies away from letting his opinions be known and has a wardrobe of many hilarious-looking suits.

Whenever Cherry criticizes a team, player or general manager, his comments are sometimes talked about for days, which proves how popular he is in the hockey world.

A lot of people aren't huge fans of Cherry, but most hockey fans can agree that he is certainly one of the most entertaining media personalities in the NHL.
