Robert Griffin III: Dynamic QB Won't Run Wild for Fantasy Owners Against Giants

Rick WeinerMay 31, 2018

For Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins, it's a good thing that he is leading the NFL in completion percentage—hitting the mark more than 70 percent of the time—because RGIII is going to find little room to run against a Giants defense coming off an absolute destruction of Alex Smith and the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6.

Now I'm not comparing Griffin to Smith, because that would be like comparing Joe Montana to Trent Dilfer—the latter was a fine QB, but he wasn't anything close to the talent that was Montana.

The Giants have gone up against two of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the league so far in 2012: the Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton and the Philadelphia Eagles' Michael Vick. They held Newton to six yards rushing on six carries in Week 3, while Vick had more success, picking up 49 yards on only eight carries in Week 5.

Griffin thrives on gaining the edge against defenses off of the play-action, something that he won't find easy to do against a Giants defense that sets the edges as well as any defense in the NFL thanks to three of the best defensive ends in the NFL: Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora.

Speaking of JPP, he offered the rookie some words of advice heading into Sunday's contest:

"

JPP to @rgiii: "Don't bring it to my side" on.nfl.com/JPPvsRGIII

— NFL (@nfl) October 18, 2012"

OK, so RGIII will just fake to the outside and go up the middle, right?

That's easier said than done, as the Giants welcome back their force in the middle, defensive tackle Chris Canty, who is set to see his first action since the Super Bowl after spending the first six weeks of the season on the PUP list.

Sure, the Redskins have the second best running game in the league, averaging 166 yards per game on the ground thanks to RGIII and Alfred Morris. But the Giants just held the NFL's most potent running attack, that of the San Francisco 49ers, to 80 yards on the ground last week.

RGIII might pick apart the Giants secondary; he could wind up with 300 yards and multiple touchdowns through the air.

But for those fantasy owners expecting the dynamic rookie signal-caller to provide top running back production on top of his passing numbers, well, you are going to find yourself disappointed with the end result.
