Bill Guerin's Goals Assist the Penguins' Win Streak Heading Toward the Playoffs

Martin AveryMar 11, 2009

Bill Guerin scored his 800th career point last week shortly after being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins and was credited with his 400th assist. He has five points in his three games with the Penguins and his new team just leapfrogged over the New York Rangers to take the final playoff position.

The Pens, with 78 points, moved one ahead of Florida and into sixth place in the crowded Eastern Conference.

The Penguins were looking for a winger to play on Sidney Crosby's line and Guerin looks like a great fit. Guerin's best season was with the Boston Bruins in 2001-02, when he scored 41 goals.

He had 23 goals and 21 assists this year for the New York Islanders and was team captain. With Crosby at centre, and captain of the Penguins, Guerin could very well be turned into a big goal scorer again.

Guerin has played for the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, San Jose Sharks, and New Jersey Devils, as well as the Islanders. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 4th 2009 just before the trade deadline.

He has won a Stanley Cup with New Jersey in 1995, the World Cup in 1996, a silver medal with Team USA at the 2002 Winter Olympics and was named MVP for the 2001 All-Star game.

He was a first-round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils.

Guerin signed a five-year contract with the Dallas Stars but they dumped him when where he notched only 40 points. Dallas bought out his contract. He went to St. Louis Blues and revived his career. He was named to the 2007 All-Star game (hosted by the Dallas Stars).

Guerin was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a conditional draft pick.
