Things That Bother Me In College Football

David HedlindMar 11, 2009

Sometimes there are just things in this world that bother us. We can’t always explain it, but sometimes we can.

This is true in the world of college football too. There are a lot of ideas, opinions, and expressions that I can’t stand.

“We”

Unless you are a coach or player, some other form of associate to the team, water boy, or assistant to the assistant trainer, you are not on the team no matter how much you believe you are.

If you watch every game from home or in the stands and the only time you get on the field is when rushing it after a big win then stop saying “We.”

If the team you back wins a title, you aren’t on the field holding the trophy. You don’t get a ring.

Cupcakes

I understand elite, great, good, and bad. I don’t understand “cupcakes.” I mean I get that it is a supposedly bad team, but if a cupcake equates to a bad team or easy win, then on a scale of pastry does that make the top tier teams something like a wedding cake?

I guess we would have something like wedding cake, birthday cake, dessert cake (no special reason but it is still cake), and then cupcakes.

DIA, DIAA, DII, DIII

To my knowledge, it has been quite a while since a DIA team has played a DII team.  They play a lot of DIAA teams, but not DII teams.

Yet every year we hear people complaining about someone else’s non-conference schedule and how they are playing lower division teams. Someone always calls teams like Appalachian State, Portland State, or Delaware DII. All of these schools are DIAA.

School Name

The last few years when Ohio State played in the National Championship game, I don’t know how many times I read a message board somewhere that Ohio was going to lose.

News flash. Ohio wasn’t in the game. The Ohio Bobcats play in the MAC. The Ohio State Buckeyes from the Big Ten played in those games.

“When your team wins a title you can talk.”

I know many fans of teams who have never won a National Championship that could talk college football circles around people whose team has won one.

And really, you are going to tell me schools like Minnesota and Maryland who won titles back in the 50s have more right to talk than schools like West Virginia, Virginia Tech, or Oregon, who have never won one?

“Beat each other up in conference”

I am not going to call any one conference out on this one; you know who you are that says this.

Every conference beats each other up. None of the BCS conferences has had a team escape conference play undefeated since Ohio State in 2006. Every conference has had an undefeated team in the last decade so no one conference is that much easier either.

Playing in January and being 6-6

I talked about this in a previous article. Playing in a January Bowl has lost its prestige with the addition of bowls like the GMAC Bowl and International Bowl to the January slate.

Other bowls such as the Liberty, Outback, and Gator Bowl, due to conference tie-ins and obligations will field games that include teams that went 7-5 or 6-6.

Really? That’s something that deserves one of the previously prestigious spots of a January bowl game, a break even 6-6 record?

For that matter, why are 6-6 teams even in bowl games? I thought these were rewards for having a good season not an average one.

Mid Majors

I have no problem with the terms BCS and non-BCS.  I don’t have a problem with any of the teams in non-BCS conferences. I just can’t stand the term “mid major.”

I don’t think teams like Boise State, Utah, and TCU deserve to be called “Mid Major” when teams like Duke and Baylor are considered among the “major.”
