Two Sent to Minor League Camp & More Yankee News

Bronx Baseball DailyMar 10, 2009

The Yankees sent Eric Hacker and Wilkin De La Rosa to their minor league complex yesterday following their decision to send four players they sent the night before.

Hacker pitched against Team USA last week and got lit up a bit, but this has more to do with the fact that minor league camp is just starting than what the Yankees think of him.

Besides, with the starting pitchers finally beginning to get stretched out there are less innings available.

Andy Pettitte appeared in his first game yesterday and did as good as can be expected in his first start. He allowed no runs while giving up a hit and a walk to go with a pair of K’s in 1.2 innings.

Ian Kennedy didn’t fare as well and continued his poor spring as he allowed five runs in 2.2 innings. He gave up five hits, including a home run, to go with one walk and a strike out.

According to Peter Abraham’s blog, CC Sabathia and Nick Swisher apparently aren’t twittering after all. The two players were said to have Twitter accounts this season allowing their fans to get first hand updates of what they were doing. Well, it turns out they aren’t directly twittering.

Instead they send text messages to their marketing reps who clean it up and post it on the web.

Brett Gardner is taking advantage the opportunity he has this spring and is leading the team with three home runs so far in spring. While he has been impressive and most fans have already forgot if it’s Melky Cabrera or Malty Contrera, it is important to realize that spring stats don’t account for much.

Jeff Weaver proved that in 2003 when he lit March up with a 2-1 record and a 2.25 ERA over 24 innings. At that time it looked like he was ready to take over the reigns in the Yankee rotation for years to come.
