The Unanswered Questions in the Chris Benoit Tragedy
Steve MannJul 8, 2007
It has been two weeks since the terrible tragedy in the Benoit home. The DA promised the case was going to get bizarre, and it has. Many questions have surfaced, with few obvious answers. If anything's clear, it's that nothing is certain.
If there were no prints found, on the other hand, explain why. That would raise a red flag for me.
DEA officials, meanwhile, report that they were investigating Benoit in connection with the large volume of steroids he had been receiving. So why was he not arrested?
The DEA claims that it doesn't arrest users, that it only wants to go after suppliers. My problem there is that Benoit was reportedly buying 10-month supplies of steroids every three to four weeks. Wouldn't it have been logical to assume that he was supplying steroids to others?
It was initially reported that Benoit and his wife were at odds over their son's treatment for Fragile X syndrome. New reports, however, have indicated that the dispute was actually over a life insurance policy Benoit had taken out on himself, one in which his ex-wife and other children were named as beneficiaries. Benoit had also apparently opened a Canadian bank account in his ex-wife's name.

Why would Benoit take such measures? Did he think he was in trouble? Was he being threatened, and was he trying to ensure that his ex-wife and children would be protected if something happened to him?
Most, though not all, insurance policies will not pay out for suicide. After going to such lengths to look out for the people he cared about, why would Benoit then void the policy by killing himself?
I would also think that a murder-suicide would have entailed a suicide note. Why was no note found? It's hard to believe Benoit wouldn't have wanted to let his family know why he did what he did.
A lot of people are making an issue of Nancy's filing for divorce on the grounds of abuse, but that was four years ago, and what married couple doesn't have problems? Remember also that Chris and Nancy reconciled just before Wrestlemania 20, and that there had been no further incidents reported to family, friends, or police.
On the contrary, those who knew them called the Benoits a loving family.
One scenario put forward by Rev. Johnny Lee Clary (a.k.a. ex-wrestler Johnny Angel) suggests that Kevin Sullivan should be investigated for this terrible crime. I'm not saying that Clary is right, but it seems to me that authorities should at least question Sullivan, if only to clear him in the event that he's not responsible.
At the very least, it would make for one less question in a case that already has too many of them.
