NFL Week 6 Picks: Green Bay Packers vs. Houston Texans

Jeff GrantOct 13, 2012

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers lands in one of his best against-the-spread (ATS) situations on Sunday night inside Reliant Stadium, as the Green Bay Packers (2-3) take on the Houston Texans (5-0), with the opening kickoff scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.

The Packers are currently 3.5-point road underdogs in the Week 6 NFL betting odds (courtesy of SBR Forum), while the total is holding steady at 47.5.

Rodgers has gone 11-5 ATS when getting points during his NFL career, which is a significant betting trend due to last year's MVP dressing up as an underdog for the first time during the 2012 regular season.

Let's take a closer look at this high-profile affair from a betting perspective, while providing a pro football pick along the way.

Green Bay Packers

1 of 4

The Green Bay Packers have alternated wins and losses over their first five games, as they come off a disappointing 30-27 setback to the Indianapolis Colts as 6.5-point road favorites last week, while going OVER the total for the second consecutive contest.

Sports bettors shouldn't write off the Packers for the rest of the season, especially with the opportunity to write the ship in front of a national audience, considering they've compiled a dominating 18-5 all-time record when playing on Sunday night.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has often done some of his best work away from Lambeau Field, entering with a 98.6 career passer rating on the road, which is the top mark in NFL history.

Houston Texans

2 of 4

The Houston Texans came away with a less-than-enthusiastic 23-17 win over the New York Jets as 9.5-point road favorites in Week 5, which served as their first ATS loss of the season.

It's important to note that Matt Schaub and company have played their first five games against AFC opponents, which may spell trouble against the Green Bay Packers.  The Texans have lost their last three contests in straight-up fashion versus NFC opponents as a home favorite.

There's a chance that Sunday night's host may get caught looking ahead, as it will be revenge-minded against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7.

Las Vegas Perspective

3 of 4

I reached out to Jimmy Vaccaro earlier this week about this high-profile affair. He serves as the public relations director for William Hill US, and here's what he had to say:

"

The road to New Orleans begins here for the Packers. I think they win this and get hot moving forward.

Prediction

4 of 4

I'm going to recommend that readers back the Green Bay Packers in this particular spot, as they've gone 20-8-1 ATS in their last 29 road games versus a team with a winning home record.

Aaron Rodgers will rise to the occasion against one of the best defenses in the NFL, especially with that unit losing linebacker Brian Cushing for the year.
