Maryland Terrapins Win the ACC Championship? Must Be the Ladies

Jarrett CarterMar 9, 2009

While some of us have been so busy commiserating over the fall of the Maryland Terrapins’ men’s basketball program (or laughing uncontrollably), the Lady Terrapins have been about the work of becoming one of the elite teams in the country. Yesterday, they added another trophy to the case; the team’s first ACC title in 20 years.

So let’s see, count the Lady Terps regular season and tournament ACC crowns, add that to the 2006 NCAA national championship, and divide that by the Maryland men choking against the Virginia Cavaliers and all but eliminating themselves from a NCAA tournament bid, and you’ve got yourself a team that the state can really rally behind.

A team that will likely secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, and make a legitimate run for another NCAA title.

And just think, they did it with homegrown talent out of the DMV. Only four players on the Lady Terrapins are from outside of the Mid-Atlantic region. Their two best players?  Seniors Marissa Coleman and Kristi Toliver? Yeah, Maryland and Virginia natives.

In an example of sports mirroring society, it may be argued that the Lady Terps have it much harder than the guys. The Maryland women, over the past three seasons, have been expected to win. They’ve played with the proverbial targets on them all over the country. And they’ve delivered far more often than not.

The guys? Well, it must suck to be Gary Williams and the boys right now.
