NFL Week 5 Top 5: Who's Number 1?

Luan MadaniJun 3, 2018

Week 5 brought about another slew of exciting games in the NFL

The week brought about surprises in terms of teams winning and losing. Fans always look to see who becomes the best team in the league after battle.

Here, we look at the top five teams in the NFL after Week 5 and see if they can sustain their places in Week 6.

5. St. Louis Rams

1 of 5

Astoundingly, the St. Louis Rams are in the top five in this list after Week 5 .

A team that only won two games in 2011, the Rams recorded their third win against the Arizona Cardinals in a complete blowout.

Sam Bradford, throwing for 141 yards and two touchdowns, seems to be playing with a meaningful purpose this season.

The Rams, perhaps not being interested in being a door mat team, played sound defense against Arizona.

The Cardinals controlled most of the game statistically, with 282 total offensive yards and 34:22 in time of possession.

It was the Rams defense, however, that was the key factor in the game. Sacking Kevin Kolb nine times, they kept the Cards to only a field goal.

Their schedule so far has been solid, recording wins over the high octane RGII and the Redskins, and also the Seattle Seahawks.

Their next few games will be telling for the team. They face Green Bay, New England and San Francisco all back-to-back-to-back.

I expect the Rams to go 1-2 in those games, pulling an upset win against the sloppy Green Bay Packers.

4. Seattle Seahawks

2 of 5

The Seattle Seahawks defense came up big against the dangerous Cam Newton.

Playing the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, the Seahawks defense kept the Panthers to just 190 yards, which is a huge key against a running fast and throwing long quarterback in Cam Newton.

This strong defensive play allowed the Seahawks offense to go to work, amassing 310 offensive yards and 35:46 in time of possession as opposed to Carolina's 24-14.

All in all, the Seahawks defeated the Panthers 16-12, which brought their season record to 3-2.

With wins against Green Bay and Dallas, the Seahawks look like a new and competitive team that can be taken seriously as opposed to the team that made the playoffs going 7-9 a few seasons ago.

Four games against New England, Detroit, San Francisco and Minnesota do them no favors, but will indeed test their metal.

Should the Seahawks even go 2-2, it will be a strong showing for a team that in the past had been easily forgotten.

3. Atlanta Falcons

3 of 5

The Atlanta Falcons are now 5-0 on the season, thanks to a 24-17 win against the Washington Redskins.

Matt Ryan, playing at high level, seems to be just part of the ingredient to their continued success.

Ryan threw for 345 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday while the Falcon defense held the Redskins to 316 yards of offense and allowed them to only hold the ball for 22:59 minutes the whole game.

Atlanta recorded 421 yards total offense and controlled the majority of the game with 37:01 in time of possession.

The big story here is Tony Gonzalez. Catching 13 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown, Gonzalez is all but sure to be a Hall of Famer and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Their next three games come against Oakland, Philadelphia and Dallas. In all honesty, I do not see the Falcons losing any one of these games.

A big thing to look at will be their game against the Eagles. The Vick aspect is always a spectacle, but look for the Falcons defense to force Vick to turn the ball over and make him pay for it.

2. San Francisco 49ers

4 of 5

The 49ers did what they were supposed to do, and that was destroy the Buffalo Bills 45-3.

In the process, they set a new franchise record, compiling 621 total offensive yards for the first time.

The defense did what it has become known for. They stifled the Bills and held them to a meek 204 yards on offense while also forcing two turnovers.

Alex Smith had yet another stellar game, throwing for 303 yards and three touchdowns.

San Francisco no doubt is one of the best teams in the NFL, arguably the best, however losing a game to the Minnesota Vikings dashed their hopes of going undefeated on the season.

With the Giants, Cardinals and the Seahawks on the horizon, the 49ers are sure to keep the ball rolling.

It wouldn't be s surprise to see them win these next three games, but it is a possibility they go 2-1 with a loss to the Giants.

1. Houston Texans

5 of 5

The Houston Texans have enjoyed immense success lately, and have begun 2012 as the NFL's best team.

Fans around the country expected them to blowout the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, and while they did defeat the Jets, 23-17, it wasn't the massacre we were all predicting.

Still, with the win, the Texans remain undefeated on the season at 5-0.

Arian Foster was a huge factor in the game as he had 29 carries for 152 yards and one touchdown.

Had it not been for the tough play of J.J. Watt, the Jets might have pulled out the win in this one.

The Texans are a sound defensive team with Matt Schaub playing tough football and Arian Foster running with purpose.

With Green Bay, Baltimore and Buffalo coming up, I expect the Texans to remain undefeated through these three games, with a blowout against Buffalo.

It will be interesting to see just how dominant the Texans can become, and when it comes postseason time, whether they will share the same fate as the Packers did last season.
