Could LaDainian Tomlinson and Drew Brees Reunite in the Big Easy?

Will OsgoodMar 8, 2009

Apparently, it is on Drew Brees' wish list of things to happen this offseason. The two exchanged pleasantries on the phone recently, in which they discussed the nature of LT's situation in San Diego.

In Brees' interview, he made no bones about how great a player he thought Tomlinson still is and how much he would love to have him in New Orleans.

For myself, I would love to have LT in black and gold, but being a former Charger fan from the days of Brees and LT, it would be oh so strange to see LT in any other uniform. This one really has me torn.

Here's my easy cop-out answer: If there were any team I want to see LT play for, it would be the Saints. I have no doubt Brees and Tomlinson would start right up where they left off when the Chargers somehow got rid of the rising star four offseasons ago. I think Tomlinson would be just another "good guy" for the New Orleans community and is definitely the kind of player Sean Payton wants on his team.

While I love LT, I don't think he's going to find a better place to play. The chance to play with your best friend on the No. 1 offense, and the most innovative (or one of) offensive minds in the game today, and to be surrounded by two other great RBs, great receivers, a wonderful offensive line, and one of the game's three best quarterbacks—what more could a guy like LT, whose only attribute missing from his career is a Super Bowl win, want?

I don't think this would hurt guys such as Pierre Thomas or Reggie Bush, mainly because Payton will just use Bush as a return guy and slot receiver while rotating Thomas and Tomlinson in the backfield (Bush would get a few carries as well).

Plus, Payton would almost assuredly commit more to running the football (and nobody is mentioning such a thing), which would automatically make the defense better because they wouldn't be on the field as much.

The only possible problems with such a move are fairly obvious, but also not known for sure. First off, what would the Saints have to do to acquire LT and stay under the cap? Second, is it possible that even Brees wouldn't be able to find that many different guys often enough to keep them all happy? Such a statement seems strange, but possible.

Personally, if Tomlinson does leave San Diego, New Orleans is the only place I would want him to go. But I also can't see him not in powder and blue. Just as much, I can't see the powder and blue without LT.
