Memo to Jerry Angelo: Either Improve The Team Or Quit

Tab BamfordMar 8, 2009

I've been critical of Chicago Bears' General Manager Jerry Angelo in the past, but I've tried to do so in a polite, non-confrontational manner.

Now I'm mad.

On Friday, the Eagles signed free agent safety Sean Jones to a one-year deal worth only $3 million. Jones, who is only 27-years old, would have been a nice replacement for Mike Brown at safety for the Bears.

Repeatedly this winter the Bears have been quietly twiddling their thumbs while the rest of the NFL improves their teams.

Other GMs have the intestinal fortitude to cut loser veterans that find themselves to be either redundant on the roster or being paid too much for what they bring to the game.

And it isn't just the Daniel Snyders of the world throwing a lot of money around; the Jones signing by the Eagles is just the most recent example of good players signing contracts that are both affordable and inexpensive somewhere other than Chicago.

Angelo pointed out in early January, during his State of the Franchise end-of-season address to the Chicago media, that the quarterback position was an area of need that would be addressed. He went as far as to say that running backs and wide receivers were nothing if the right quarterback wasn't in place.

He then signed Brett Basanez and has now changed his stance, telling the media that a change in course now would hurt Orton's development.

When did Angelo, who brought in Brian Griese despite having both Orton and Rex Grossman, ever care about a player's development?

Angelo has done nothing but make fans ask questions and change his story for years. He appears to be a believer that, if just enough smoke and mirrors are in play, he can confuse enough people to the point that he never has to answer for his inability to judge talent or put together a winning roster.

So, now that I'm mad, I write a new memo to the Bears' General Manager: Jerry Angelo—do your job or get out of Chicago.

The fans want and deserve a winner, not a whining GM with a bucket full of excuses and rhetoric for why he isn't active.
