Santonio Holmes' Injury Downgrades Fantasy Value of Entire Jets Offense

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

Anyone that had Santonio Holmes on their fantasy team has probably already dropped him. The Jets' star wide receiver will miss the rest of the season with a Lisfranc injury, per USA Today.

The void left by Holmes' absence goes deeper than it appears on the surface.

When an offense with a mediocre quarterback and a run-of-the-mill rushing attack loses its best receiver, the ripple effect can be expected to be huge. While the New York Jets may be crying, fantasy owners of Mark Sanchez, Shonn Greene and Dustin Keller may be following suit shortly.

Sanchez is not the type of quarterback that makes his receivers better. He needs dynamic pass-catchers and smart route-runners just to be average. We saw proof of this last week when Holmes went down with the injury.

The man that stands between the world and Tebow Time was brutal. He finished with 103 passing yards and he didn't find the end zone. With Holmes in the lineup, Sanchez is a spot-starter during your best guy's bye.

Without him, he has little to no value.

If the Jets were running the ball better, things would be different. However, Greene has struggled mightily, and seems to have lost the explosion required to hit the few holes he sees effectively.

He's averaging just 47.8 yards per game with one touchdown and two fumbles. Without a major threat in the passing game, defenses will key in even more on stopping the run. Greene hasn't had much success against traditional fronts, the chances he'll bust out against defenses with more men in the box are slim.

The one possible bright spot from a fantasy standpoint is rookie Stephen Hill, but he's banged up as well. He only has five receptions this year, because he's been nursing a hamstring injury. Even if he plays, what fantasy owner is going to feel comfortable depending on him?

He'd be a flex position starter on a poor fantasy roster.

Keller hasn't played since Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills. Stepping in at this point of the season is going to be a challenge. There is no guarantee he'll even be available for this game. ESPN.com has him listed as questionable with his own hamstring issue.

Holmes' injury has turned the Jets from a slightly valuable fantasy football source to a complete wasteland. Fantasy owners should stay far away from offensive players in green and white.
