What Carles Puyol's Injury Means for Barcelona Going Forward

Everything was going so well for Barcelona at Benfica, but Carles Puyol’s sickening injury late on took the gloss off an otherwise gleaming night.

The 34-year-old Barca stalwart was coming back from injury and looked in good shape, but when he landed awkwardly from a high leap in the Benfica box, it was immediately obvious he’d done himself serious harm.

Early reports suggest Puyol has suffered a dislocated elbow, which will mean a few weeks out and leave Barca coach Tito Vilanova with some defensive headaches ahead of Sunday’s Clasico meeting with Real Madrid.

Gerard Pique missed the Benfica game due to injury, so it could mean a relatively untried pairing of Alex Song and Javier Mascherano against Madrid.

With Barca looking less than convincing at the back this season, Puyol’s injury is the last thing Vilanova needed right now.
