Replacement Google and the 10 Funniest NFL Ref Jokes, Tweets and Memes

0 of 11

Replacement Google is one of many funny responses people have come up with on the Internet these days to mock the NFL and its replacement referees.

It's one of the perks of living in a democracy. We can mock the powers that be without fear of reprisal, and that's a good thing. It's a way for us to let off steam without hurting anyone around us.

Here are the funniest jokes, memes and tweets to have been born from the mess that is the NFL's attempt to make do with substandard referees.

Enjoy, and spread the love around to all your friends.

Replacement Google

If you haven't already heard of, you need to go check it out.

Erik Johnson is the man behind this brilliant response to the Monday Night Football debacle that gave the Seattle Seahawks an undeserved victory over the Green Bay Packers.

He set it up to send you to interesting/funny images when you search for terms that stem from the game. Here are a few of the top ones:

    - Golden Tate

    - Green Bay Packers

    - Interception

    - Simultaneous Possession

    - M.D. Jennings

Too Much Confusion

As bad as things have been, this meme doesn't seem like much of an overstatement.

Rules? Who Needs 'Em?

Dear God, if you love football (and I know you do), please send your angels to intercede with Roger Goodell and the referees to make it stop.

Conan O'Brien's Take on the Replacements

There are some really good ones in here.

Conan O'Brien never fails to tickle my funny bone, and this is well worth the watch.

Most of the replacement refs seem completely star struck.

Players have successfully intimidated them into calling penalties and taking them back. It's ridiculous.

Perhaps this meme isn't far from the truth.

No Wonder They Take so Long...

The games take longer, and now we know why.

These guys just don't want to go home.

Albert Brooks Hits Twitter

7 of 11

Comedian and actor Albert Brooks didn't hold back his displeasure after watching the Green Bay Packers get robbed on Monday Night Football.

He started out with a serious rant:

How much could the referees want that the NFL would ruin the game this way?

    — Albert Brooks (@AlbertBrooks) September 24, 2012

Then, he launched into a few excellent jokes to further highlight his general displeasure:

Breaking sports news: NFL refs just reviewed '86 World Series. Bill Buckner did NOT drop the ball.

    — Albert Brooks (@AlbertBrooks) September 25, 2012

Just spoke to the NFL commissioner. He said if I can save them money the Super Bowl can be played at my house.

    — Albert Brooks (@AlbertBrooks) September 25, 2012

You know what would be funny? If the Olympic refs went on strike and someone from real estate had to judge diving.

    — Albert Brooks (@AlbertBrooks) September 25, 2012

    Well played, sir. Well played.

Twitter Reacts

Here are some of the funniest tweets we saw about the replacement refs.

    Not Bill Walton opines:

With the replacement refs from tonight's game, Carson Palmer would be the greatest QB ever if he could win games throwing INTs.

    — Not Bill Walton (@NotBillWalton) September 25, 2012

    Faux John Madden quipped:

BREAKING:Referee lockout to end; Replacement refs to report back to Foot Locker ASAP

    — Faux John Madden (@FauxJohnMadden) September 26, 2012

Awful Announcing with an astute observation:

Vince McMahon has got to be kicking himself thinking he never thought of the brilliance of replacement refs for the XFL.

    — Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) September 25, 2012

    Faux Chris Berman spouts off:

I'm considering dropping Aaron Rodgers on my fantasy team to pick up some replacement refs. Guaranteed points for any home team.

    — Faux Chris Berman (@FauxChrisBerman) September 25, 2012

Bitter Blue Betty has an interesting theory:

Replacement Refs are God's Judgment for not respecting His Holy Day... Repent, switch to Saturdays and the #SEC and be saved. #WarEagle

    — Bitter Blue Betty (@BitterBlueBetty) September 26, 2012

Buffalo Wild Wings with a suspicious claim:

We love it when games go late but can assure you we had nothing to do with what happened in Seattle last night. #replacementrefs

    — Buffalo Wild Wings (@BWWings) September 25, 2012

There are loads and loads more on Twitter, but we have to stop somewhere.

Are You Smarter Than a Replacement Ref?

    Watch out for spiders...

    "Don't do that cuz!"

It's Funny 'Cause It's True

10 of 11

It's worth noting that this ref isn't a replacement, but that doesn't detract from the legitimacy of this meme.

Remember, a replacement ref gave the Tennessee Titans 12 extra yards after marking off a penalty from the wrong yard line—the game-winning drive, no less (h/t's Peter King).

It wasn't as blatant as the last-second Hail Mary pass in Seattle, but it's a call that surely helped the Titans win.

Hopefully, the real refs can come back soon, so we can rip into them

Seriously though, this has gotten completely out of hand. It's time for the amateurs to go home and the pros to get back to work.
