Georgia Football: Winners and Losers from the Week 3 Game vs. Vanderbilt

Brian JonesJun 7, 2018

Georgia came into the game against Vanderbilt with a lot of momentum, as they have scored at least 40 points in their first three games, which is something they have never done in school history.

They were able to carry that momentum and blow past the Commodores 48-3 to improve to 4-0. It was a game in which a lot of Bulldogs played well, and they seem to be improving each time they step on the field.

And while a lot of players for Georgia played well, there were a few players that did not have a great outing and can’t wait to get back on the field next week.

Here are the winners and losers for the game against the Commodores.

Winner: Aaron Murray

1 of 5

It was another strong game for Aaron Murray, as he went 18-of-24 for 250 yards, two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.

At one point of the game, Murray was 12-of-12 and was seven completions away from breaking the school record for most consecutive completions in a game.

Murray is making all the throws and has vastly matured from a time he was a redshirt freshman. As good as the running game has been for the Bulldogs, the offense will go as far as Murray will take them—and he has the ability to take them further than he did last year.

Winner: The Running Backs

2 of 5

Speaking of the running game, Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley were at it again, as they ran past and over the Commodores.

Marshall rushed 10 times for 82 yards and two touchdowns, while Gurley rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.

But let’s not forget about Ken Malcome, who had six rushes for 41 yards.

Georgia may not have a back that will carry the ball 25 times a game, but the three backs they have do a lot of different things well, which makes opposing defenses have fits all game long.

Winner: Jarvis Jones

3 of 5

Jarvis Jones missed last week’s game against FAU because of a groin injury he suffered against Missouri.

He returned for the Vandy game, and showed no signs of an injured groin, as the All-American linebacker tallied seven tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack.

Jones was all over the field, which made the Vanderbilt offense account for him at all times. The defense is good without Jones, but Jones makes everybody around him better. That’s why guys like Amarlo Herrera and Chase Vasser were able to make plays. Jones was being disruptive in the backfield, and that opened the door for other defenders.

Loser: Arthur Lynch

4 of 5

It was not a good night for Arthur Lynch.

The tight end got called for a false-start penalty, he dropped a first-down pass and got yelled at by Murray when he did not run a route in the red zone.

Overall, Lynch has played well for the Bulldogs this season and is not in any danger of missing any playing time. But if this keeps up, Jay Rome’s playing time will increase because big things are expected from him.

Loser: Malcolm Mitchell

5 of 5

Malcolm Mitchell is going to be what Champ Bailey was for the Bulldogs back in the mid-90s in terms of playing on both sides of the ball.

Mitchell saw limited time on offense, but was effective, as he had a 14-yard rush on a reverse play. On defense, the sophomore struggled in coverage, getting beat deep a few times.

The one thing to remember about Mitchell is that he is new to the position. So while he will make some big plays, he will also give up a few big plays from time to time.

As the season progresses, Mitchell will become a better cornerback as he sees more reps. It will just take some time to get to where he wants to be.
