Alex KayJun 1, 2018

Tragedy has once again struck the boxing world.

According to AP sports writer Gerald Imray (via Yahoo! Sports), Corrie Sanders—a former heavyweight champion—was shot and killed during a robbery at a restaurant in Brits, South Africa.

The 46-year-old was hit in the hand and stomach during a 21st-birthday celebration for his nephew. He died at a Pretoria hospital early on Sunday morning.

Sanders was best known for his stunning upset of Wladimir Klitschko back in 2003, when he knocked out the Ukrainian and took the WBO title.

The police have yet to make any arrests but have launched a full murder investigation, according to Police Brigadier Thulani Ngubane. The spokesman also noted that the attack was carried out by three armed men who entered the restaurant with the intention to rob it and fired randomly.

Sanders was the only reported injury, but other customers had possessions such as cell phones and bags stolen.

The boxer retired back in 2008 with a 42-4 record (31 KOs) after a magnificent 20-year career. His last fight came against Osborne Machimana with the South African heavyweight title on the line. Sanders was knocked out in the first round and decided to call it quits.

At 6’4”, Sanders relied more on his quickness than sheer size and strength to beat his opponents. That’s not to say he wasn’t a powerful puncher, but he used speed and intelligence to greater effect.

Stay tuned to Bleacher Report for the latest breaking news and updates surrounding the sudden and tragic death of Corrie Sanders and the quest to bring his assailants to justice.
