Philadelphia Flyers Deal Scottie Upshall for Daniel Carcillo

Jeff DanzigerCorrespondent IMarch 4, 2009

This afternoon, the Philadelphia Flyers traded forward Scottie Upshall and a 2009 second round pick to the Phoenix Coyotes for enforcer Daniel Carcillo. The move cleared up a little cap space and the Flyers then traded a sixth round pick to San Jose for 31-year-old defenseman Kyle McLaren, who has spent this season in the minor leagues.

The Flyers needed a deal that would bolster their blue line, but was dealing a young, speedy winger and several draft picks for a goon and an old defenseman who hasn't played an NHL game this year really the answer?

Upshall is an energy player. He moves around the ice with speed and always finishes his hits. He is a feisty winger that was well liked in Philadelphia. The trade for Carcillo was more likely to free up cap space for the second trade, but McLaren hasn't played a game in the NHL this season and it's hard to believe he'll be an immediate impact.

The Flyers tight cap situation kept them from making a strong push for Jay Bouwmeester or Chris Pronger, both who would've added a physical attitude to the Flyers defensemen.

Rumors were circulating that the Flyers would move a goalie, either Antero Niittymaki or Martin Biron, to make cap room for a big defenseman, but in the end the organization thought it was better to keep them both.

The trade of Upshall is already being questioned by Flyers fans, but only time will tell if the deal will be beneficial to a deep playoff run.
