Not Just Another Matthew Stafford Article: The Reason for the Lions' Uncertainty
Looking at past championship teams, you can tell that the most important position is definitely the quarterback. The player that usually wins the MVP is the quarterback, but he usually isn't the best "prospect in the draft." He might be the sexy pick, but the difference between now and 25 years ago is that "sexy" was once the guy who would stand in the pocket and take one for the team. Usually when you sign a multi-million dollar contract it tends to scramble your brain. Team leadership is a vastly underrated "stat" that the "sexy pick" often lacks. It is crucial to all Super Bowl-winning teams, and looking at Stafford, I don't see it. He couldn't lead the No. 1 ranked team in the country to a title in the college level. How is he going to lead a 0-16 team to a Super Bowl at the professional level? The "sexy pick" is always the one with the highest chance of being a bust. There are so many different factors that go into a winning football player. Who cares about the guy who can throw for 4,000 yards in a season and earn 50 touchdowns? You have to be able to mesh with the coaches and other players around you.
