How Is This for a Defensive Identity?

Anthony ArkerMar 3, 2009

I don't know if it was Barry Sanders leaving or Matt Millen coming that took the heart out of our once beloved Lions (probably the latter). They use to have identity. The Colts, New England, and Arizona have their passing game.

The Giants and Carolina have their running game. The Ravens and the Steelers have their defense. (Isn't there something all of these teams have in common?)

This team desperately needs an identity. Now they can go the route of drafting a talented young quarterback and taking a flier on a mid level tackle at 20. But the cliche "Defense wins championships" is said way to many times to not be correct.

Detroit needs to be feared for more than just the streets outside the stadium. They need to bring a defensive intensity to a dome that could give us the actual advantage of playing in D town.

They need to bring back the times when they would get charged timeouts for the crowd being to loud.

Luckily we were all blessed with a GM (same initials as garbage man) like Jerry Jones that will take all our trash. He already gave us a top-20 selection and now we get a starting corner/safety in Anthony Henry for basically nothing. This allows us to be extremely flexible any way we go this upcoming April.

At No. 1, the Lions have a chance to take a linebacker that is thought of as the best prospect since Lavarr Arrington. I know a lot of people think taking a strong side linebacker at No. 1 is a waste. But he has hybrid written all over him. Schwartz will find a more than a way to save gas with this stud. He can play all over the field.

No. 20 is an interesting situation. If we pass on him and teams shore up their quarterback voids there is a chance Stafford could fall out of the top 10. If this happens by all means trade up with our two third rounders and our No. 20 to snag him.

If it doesn't, grab the linebacker who brings the most punch. How does Sims, Laurinaitis, Curry look on a depth chart? I know not a lot of people are saying bad. Note that if this happens that a defensive tackle is extremely important to protect these guys.

I'm not saying that Stafford hundred percent for sure will not pan out, but why go with some bad odds when we could improve so much with hardly any chance? It's like playing craps and betting on six and eight instead of five and nine. Less chance but still a payout. And the Lions have been missing a payout for quite some time.
