Pop Star Justin Bieber Draws Hockey Offer from Minor League Team in Bakersfield
Do you Beliebe in magic? How about in Justin Bieber featuring up front in the next Bakersfield Condors hockey game?
Some genius in the back porch of California, known as Bakersfield, found the perfect way to get people to type the words Bakersfield and Condors while making it national news.
As Off the Bench reports, the pop star millions love and just as many scoff at is being offered a gig with the minor league outfit.
The team, which plays in the ECHL, issued a press release that stated:
"Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Matt O’Dette (@BigOdie2) announced today that they have offered hit recording artist RW Justin Bieber an amateur tryout contract for the upcoming 2012-13 season.
"
Yeah, reads sort of funny, doesn't it?
It gets even sillier. Here is what O'Dette had to say, rather gush, about the superstar singer:
"Very rarely do you see this combination of skill and toughness. We share a common Canadian heritage since we both hail from Ontario. I’ve scouted some video of him online skating with my hometown team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and I think he could provide some elusive speed up front for us. Plus, he’s a right-handed shot which we’ve been looking to add. I think if we paired him on a line with (Robby) Dee and (Peter) Boyd we’d be tough to beat.
"
Really, any small-market team should jump on board. Some WNBA team should offer a contract to Scarlett Johansson. A Triple-A team in Buffalo should announce it's formally making Brad Pitt its player-manager for the season.
Of course, there is a tad more credence to this offer than anything I could make up. Bieber has some skills when it comes to playing hockey.
As Today reported back in December of 2011, Bieber played some pickup hockey with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
However, that meeting was more fun and frivolity than hard-hitting hockey practice.
Even MTV sounds incredulous of this offer, as it states Bieber's joining the team "seems unlikely considering his Believe tour kicks off later this month in Arizona and shows no signs of stopping for league games."
Nice marketing move, Bakersfield. Well played indeed.
