The One and Only Trade the Broncos Could Consider Making for Jay Cutler

Sayre BedingerMar 2, 2009

If you have heard it once, you have heard it a thousand times. Jay Cutler was reportedly the headliner in a blockbuster trade in which the Broncos would send their star quarterback to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a first round pick, which would then have been traded to the New England Patriots for quarterback Matt Cassel.

Cassel is now a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Cutler is irate. Cutler has publicly discussed his displeasure with the Broncos, and according to Peter King of Sports Illustrated, had reportedly asked for a trade upon the Broncos' firing of former quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates.

Regardless, the proposed trade of Cutler and a first round pick in exchange for Cassel is absolutely ridiculous. It seems as though Tampa Bay and Detroit were just toying with the Broncos' new management; trying to catch them in the moment, if you will.

A new trade rumor, as if there were not enough already, has surfaced on the Cutler front.

Pro Football Talk broke the news that Cleveland could be intrigued by Cutler, and that they might be willing to pull off a blockbuster deal with the Broncos. The proposed deal is this:

Cutler and a third round draft pick to Cleveland for quarterback Brady Quinn and defensive tackle Shaun Rogers.

I'm not trying to condone a trade for Cutler in any way, and I think the most sensible thing for him and the Broncos to do is to mend fences and get back to football business. However, if Cutler is unwilling to cooperate, the Broncos should seriously look into this deal.

Denver is obviously not going to pull the trigger on a trade that doesn't involve long-term insurance at quarterback, and Quinn is exactly that. The former first round pick of the Browns had a decent year last year taking over the starting job in Cleveland.

In addition to Quinn, the Broncos would receive Rogers, who has publicly asked to be traded. Rogers was mentioned in trade rumors to the Broncos last season, and now there is word he may be available once again. The Broncos are looking for a star nose tackle to build their new 3-4 defense around, and Rogers would fit the bill perfectly.

Again, this is all purely speculation, and no trade between the two teams, nor interest has been hinted at. However, if Cutler continues his rant and talks his way out of Denver, this is the one and only destination that makes any sense for the Broncos at all.
