Mike "Leroy" Brown Quickly Defeats Leonard Garcia at WEC 39

Dorothy WillisMar 2, 2009

Holy Cow!

What a beatdown Mike Brown put on Leonard Garcia last night.

I thought after a good night's sleep I could put it in perspective better, but no way. Any way I view it—what a massacre!

Brown may look like a shorter, red-headed version of Country Western singer Lyle Lovett, but he fights like Jim Croce's "Leroy Brown."

Leonard came out with good buddy and training partner Donald Cerrone and uber coach Gred Jackson. Leonard was relaxed, looked fit, and had several inches over his opponent.

Before the fight even started, I made the statement, "I feel sorry for Mike Brown." Judging from seeing Leonard in the past, I expected him to be tough on his feet and/or on the ground, but there was no explosion, no awesome "lay'em low strike" or sudden clever move for a quick submission.

This was Mike Brown's fight right from the get-go and he laid my boy low with no room or time to take a deep breath or recover. How awe-inspiring to see Mike at the top of his game and smothering all attempts by Garcia to regain himself and put up a defence worthy of his opponent's ferocity.

Here I had thought the first title defence curse that crumbled GSP when he first fought Matt Serra might strike Brown at the fists of Leonard Garcia. Sorry, Grandma, it just wasn't meant to be!

So after a nice relaxing night's sleep, I am still just as dumbfounded as when I sat watching the fight as it happened.

If I were an announcer, I would have to add "meaner than a junkyard dog" to all of Mike Brown's future fight introductions.

Last night, without a doubt, Mike Brown could have had Leroy Brown for a late night snack—and the junkyard dog for dessert!
