Why Gene Smith Is the Right Man for the Job
Already we have seen the new Jaguar management at work with its new plan, more homework and less money. Everyone that plays in the NFL has dynamic athletic ability, or they wouldn't play.
So that's not in question when it comes to Free agency. Your not going to get all your info by just watching game film, you have to talk to their coaches, their position coach.
You don't want to invest million's of dollars on a player that will become disruptive or a distraction the first sign of trouble, either by injury or bad play. You want a fighter, someone that will put the team first. And that's the new philosophy of Gene Smith.
The re-sighing of Brad Meester and Scott Starks were a no-brainer. The Jags have a capable back up in Dennis Norman but he failed to show that he was starting material when Meester was out in the beginning of the season.
The Jags could lose up to three players that played in the secondary Drayton Florence and free agents Pierson Prioleau, Gerald Sensabuagh. Scott Starks is the fastest on the team and adds depth to a depleted secondary. The last addition is Sean Condesine (misspelled).
Now full attention will be directed at the draft. We have a lot of holes that at best the draft will fill three spots. The remainder will be role players. I am optimistic with this team though, I like our QB (when we have protection) and our new running back due should be just as formidable.
With a year and a full camp under his belt, Derrick Harvey I feel is a Mario Williams protege.
And if you remember full Mario Williams had a lack luster freshman year in the NFL, too. Quiton Groves, who in my opinion was steal, has a whole year to put more weight on. Our linebacker core is probably the most underrated in the NFL, plus Rashean Mathis and Reggie Nelson will always play up to par.
So the holes that need to be addressed are in my opinion go from urgent need to not so urgent need:
1. Offensive line-We need a tackle and a center
2. Secondary-Need a Strong Safety or corner opposite of Rashean Mathis
2. Defensive line-A D/Tackle, hopefully BJ Raji or Pearia Jerry
3. WR-this position is so hit or miss that I cannot see the Jags picking a WR in the first two rounds, unless Crabtree falls in their laps.
Draft prediction: We trade down and gain second, third, and seventh. We pick up Pearia Jerry or Andre Smith. If we do not trade down we draft Micheal Oher or BJ Raji.
