Robert Griffin III Video: Watch Rookie Connect with Pierre Garcon for 1st NFL TD

Ben ChodosJun 7, 2018

The Washington Redskins' Robert Griffin III has officially thrown his first touchdown pass as an NFL quarterback.

Everyone knew the reigning Heisman Trophy winner was a fantastic athlete with a rocket arm; but there is so much more to quarterbacking than that, and Griffin still has plenty of questions to answer.

Is he accurate enough to be successful at the next level? Can he read a blitz quickly and get the ball out of his hands? Can he stand in the pocket and make a throw when the defense is closing in?

Watch this video and all those questions are answered.

New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins fired off the line of scrimmage locked in on Griffin. The rookie coolly set his feet and kept his eyes down the field. At the last second, he fired a laser beam down the field to the spot where the blitzing safety would have been had he stayed in coverage.

Pierre Garcon was doing his touchdown dance, 88 yards later. As the Redskins noted via Twitter, this was the longest pass by a Washington quarterback in almost 25 years.

"

The 88-yd. TD to Garçon was the longest pass play by the Redskins since Ed Rubbert's 88-yd. TD pass to Anthony Allen on Oct. 4, 1987. #HTTR

— Redskins (@Redskins) September 9, 2012"

This touchdown pass shows Griffin’s ability to process coverages quickly and use his physical gifts to do things other quarterbacks cannot. There may not be another passer who could put that much zip on a pass while throwing off their back foot.

And this came in the first quarter of his first regular-season game at this level. Redskins fans have a lot to look forward to with Griffin as their quarterback.
