The (Monday) Morning Tailgate

Today’s ceremonial tailgate bratwurst is awarded to Serge Tuganov. No, he’s not a hockey player. In fact, this story has very little—if anything—to do with sports. But we liked the story, and thought we should share.

Serge (from Moscow) accepted a $4,000 bet from two women that he couldn’t handle a 12-hour sex marathon with them. According to KTLA News, he won by downing a bottle of Viagra. However, right after the orgy, he died of a heart attack.

Serge was only 28.

1874—Baseball officially adopts the batter’s box after two players attempt to swing from their dugout.

1962—Wilt Chamberlain scores 100 points in a game the Warriors won 169–147 over the Knicks. It set what was then a record for the most combined points in a game by two teams and was never technically finished due to fans rushing the court after Chamberlain’s 100th point was scored.

(Fun fact: we thought about a Chamberlain/sex joke nearly 100 times during this writing.)

1989—Darryl Strawberry throws a punch at Keith Hernandez during a Mets photo session after Hernandez called Strawberry a “coked-out-ninny” for failing to wear a mustache.

New Chiefs QB Matt Cassel and former Dolphins/Lions/Ravens/Bengals QB Scott Mitchell

Considering that, after his successful audition in Miami as a result of Dan Marino’s injury, Mitchell was signed by the Lions to be their starter and proceeded to go 29-35 as a starter throughout the remainder of his career, Chiefs fans are hoping this story turns out a little better.

After LeBron became the youngest player to score 10,000 points nearly a year ago, a few things came to mind:

For historical perspective, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar accomplished the feat in 313 games while Michael Jordan reached the 10,000 point mark at 303 games. The fastest ever to 10,000 was Wilt Chamberlain, who did so at 236 games.
