Down goes Federer!

No. 1 seed Roger Federer made his exit from the 2012 U.S. Open after Tomas Berdych stunned the legend 6-7(1), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in their quarterfinal battle on Wednesday night.

This is Federer's earliest U.S. Open exit in nine years.

Roger was inconsistent in this match. He started off strong, but waned to a first set defeat. He was missing his serves, and Berdych made him pay. Most surprising was Berdych's dominance of Federer with his own serve.

The Czech-native has a blistering serve and he carried an average first-serve speed of 123 mph, but Federer was even missing serves could normally handle.

The 17-time Grand Slam champ made a run to close out the third set by winning the final four games, but Berdych shut the door in the fourth, and now moves on to play Andy Murray in the semis.

Other Notable Matches

Andy's Goodbye

Andy Roddick said goodbye to professional tennis on Wednesday in the fourth round of the 2012 U.S. Open.

He fell to seventh-seeded Juan Martin del Potro 7-6(1), 6-7(4), 2-6, 6-4, and with the loss, Roddick is hanging up his professional racket for good.

It was an admirable performance for Roddick in the rain interrupted match. The two began this contest on Tuesday, and Roddick led the first-set tie break 1-0 when they were delayed by weather.

He started play on Thursday in promising fashion by winning that tie breaker, but it was all downhill from there. Roddick hit 65 percent of his first serves, which was his lowest mark for a match in this tourney, and he could not overcome that.

Serena Rolls

Serena Williams handled her quarterfinals match like it was a first-round affair as she dispatched 12th-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, 6-1, 6-3.

It took her less than an hour to bash off 12 aces and earn the victory. Serena has won this tournament three times, but she has never looked better at Flushing Meadows than she does right now.

She will take on Sara Errani next, and after she blows Errani off the court, she will take on the winner of the Maria Sharapova-Victoria Aaerenka semi.
