Barack Obama Wrestling in the WWE?

Joe Burgett Mar 1, 2009

We all saw him at an NBA game recently; he is a former basketball player, and he is getting a basketball court put in at the White House.

Who am I talking about?

Well, our new United States President Barack Obama, of course.

We all know he is athletic and has a history in sports, but is he really ready for the WWE?

I'm not so sure he is, which is why "HE" won't be running into turnbuckles anytime soon.

It is actually a gimmick the WWE is using in their developmental area, FCW.

Apparently, Brian Jossie, "the now first black president of wrestling, has recently debuted the gimmick under the name 'Abraham Obama Washington,' and is also trying to emulate Barack Obama's appearance in Florida Championship Wrestling," says pwrestlingnews.com.

But in an awkward turn of events, an Ohio-based indy wrestler by the name of Lamont "Action" Williams has been doing the very same "First Black President of Professional Wrestling" gimmick for about a year.

Since Jossie is a part of the WWE, he most likely will keep the gimmick.  But if Williams has copyrights to it, then he would have to let it go. Most likely, Jossie thought he could use the gimmick from Williams, since he was in the WWE's developmental area and Williams was not.

A brief bio on Lamont "Action" Williams reads: "Crooked Barack Obama Spin-Off. Since there is going to take a "Black Man" to repair this country in despair, then it is obvious that it will take a "Black MAN" to help restore the attendance, credibility, and entertainment value of professional wrestling."

Williams also states Presidential-like phrases in his promos, including:

"NEW Black Party"

"Vote or BE CHOKED Campaign '08"

"We need change, and for change, we need action...Lamont 'Action' Williams, The Reason You Watch Professional Wrestling"

"The Best Thing Since Wrestling"

and "Greetings my fellow FANS and Constituents"

He also wears red, white, and blue tights with stars on them.

Williams has been doing the gimmick in the Cleveland All-Pro Wrestling promotion, and he really wants a WWE deal, which is not a shocker; what wrestler out there doesn't want to go to the WWE?

Williams came up with the idea, and in my opinion, he deserves to keep it. Jossie didn't come up with the idea first, therefore it is not his.

Sure, the WWE has done similar gimmicks to other wrestlers in their own promotions. But since it is in the same company, no harm is done.

The WWE owns pretty much any name and gimmick currently in the WWE, and the wrestlers can do nothing about it. When Mick Foley left for TNA, he was able to take a few of his gimmicks with him.

The Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and Mick Foley names were all titles Foley made up himself, and the WWE, apparently not wise enough to sign the gimmicks when Foley first came to the company, had to let them go.

However, the WWE did come up with the Mankind gimmick, arguably Foley's most successful gimmick ever. They own it because they came up with it. All new wrestlers have new names in the WWE.

There are special cases, like Gail Kim, Cody Rhodes, and Ted Dibiase, Jr. But that is because the names are familiar to WWE fans, and they would turn out better with those names than without them.

It is a big deal with the WWE to give new names to its new crop of wrestlers. They changed Matt Sydel to Evan Bourne, Jake Hager to Jake Swagger, and most recently, T.J. Wilson to Tyson Kidd.

There are many reasons why they do this, but in the end it all has to do with money; I know, it's a shocker, right?

Going back to the Obama gimmick, I personally like the idea for it. But I feel if the WWE does use it in any form, it should be with Williams, considering he used it first.

However, that would require them giving him a WWE contract.
