Fantasy Football Rankings 2012: Underrated Players Sure to Make Instant Impact

Adam WellsJun 4, 2018

The beauty of managing fantasy football is that it gives you an opportunity to grow and learn about the subtle nuances of the game in order to become a better player. It is a lot like being a rookie in the NFL, then growing into an All-Pro a few years later.

Unfortunately, you don't have time to develop because your opponents are going to show no mercy toward you or your team.

So to get you ready for the 2012 season, here is a look at the underrated players who are going to get you a lot of points in Week 1.

Justin Blackmon, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars

I am skittish on Blackmon as a potential impact receiver in the NFL. That said, the Jaguars have absolutely nothing else on offense heading into this week's game against Minnesota.

That is another factor that works in Blackmon's favor, as the Vikings boast one of the worst secondaries in the NFL. They finished 26th in the league in pass yards allowed last season, so Blackmon should have little problems using his big frame to create opportunities.

Blaine Gabbert obviously scares fantasy owners around the world, as he should. But Blackmon can help turn him into at least a capable NFL quarterback.

For a one-week look, Blackmon could be a nice fantasy play against the Vikings. He should have a handful of catches and a touchdown in this matchup.

Michael Bush, RB, Chicago Bears

Betting on a backup running back to have success is a risky move, but in this case, I think Bush is a really strong fantasy option.

Let's start with the fact that the Bears are playing the Colts, who have never been strong up the middle on the defensive line. They are one of the easiest teams to run on because they use speed off the edge rather than power.

Another factor working in Bush's favor, offensive coordinator Mike Tice has said that he expects 1,000-yard seasons from Bush and Matt Forte. That tells me there are going to be plenty of carries to go around this season.

Even if Tice was just blowing smoke to make Bush happy, the Bears will establish the run in this game, and Bush will be a huge part of that.

Jake Locker. QB, Tennessee Titans

The Titans have a tall task ahead of them in Week 1 against the New England Patriots. They are giving Jake Locker the keys to the car after making him their top pick in the 2011 draft. He is going to have every chance to succeed this season.

We already know what a great athlete Locker is, but the Titans are actually an underrated team heading into the season. They have plenty of weapons around Locker to help him shine right away.

Kenny Britt won't be around for this game due to a suspension, but Nate Washington, who quietly had a 1,000-yard season, is still around. Rookie Kendall Wright should step into Britt's shoes for at least one game.

Plus, the Patriots haven't stopped anyone from throwing the ball on them since 2009. Locker should at least find it easy to throw for a lot of yards, with a touchdown mixed in.
