Old Navy Sells Inaccurate Houston Texans 1961 AFC Champion T-Shirts
Houston Texans fans, rejoice. The good people at Old Navy have worked the sands of time just enough to make the 1961 AFC championship part of your franchise's history.
Forget that the AFC or the Houston Texans weren't actually things back in 1961.
The Big Lead (h/t Larry Brown Sports) spotted quite the odd T-shirt floating around Old Navy online stores. It's all part of the NFL "Team Championship" collection.

It seems some franchises demand a tad bit of creativity.
Any Texans fan would be proud to wear this shirt. However, he or she may have some explaining to do when people ask about that 1961 AFC claim.
The Big Lead report reminds us that, yes, Houston did enjoy a great deal of success in both the 1960 and 1961 seasons. That's when the Houston Oilers won AFL championships—the AFC later being founded in 1970 when the NFL merged with the AFL.
Sadly, those records departed with the Oilers as they became the Tennessee Titans.
Not that this is the first Old Navy misstep in the world of sports. Last year, it released some T-shirts for fans of college-football programs that stated, "Let's Go!"
Only, they left out the apostrophe. I say those shirts and this particular Texans one would be some rather rare paraphernalia to have around.
A spokesperson for Gap Inc., which owns the Old Navy brand, sounded off on the mistake and apologizes for the error. Here is what Edie Kissko had to say, via The Houston Chronicle:
"The NFL clothing sold in our Old Navy stores is created by a third party sports licensing company. It is our intention to always provide the best merchandise to our customers and NFL fans. We apologize for this error and are removing the T-shirts.
"
We accept your apology.
I would also like to suggest fans buy any Old Navy sports apparel you might see in the future. There is a good chance it becomes a rare piece of clothing—clothing that may feature mistakes, but rare nonetheless.
