US Open Tennis 2012 Results: Roger Federer's Title Hopes Boosted with Walkover
Roger Federer may be turning back the clock with his performances this year, but he is still 31, and those legs with all those tennis miles on them can use all the rest they can get.
Well, Roger got to save his legs just when the tournament action is supposed to start heating up. His fourth-round opponent, Mardy Fish, withdrew prior to the match due to health concerns.
So now No. 1-seeded Federer has been granted a bye in the fourth round, and has been given a chance to freshen up and regroup with just three rounds left before a champion is crowned.
And it's not like Federer needed any boosts in this tournament; he is rolling.
Fed has not lost more than four games in any set in this U.S. Open run. He has his whole game working.
His backhand has been reliable, his forehand has been dominant and his serve is in a groove.
That last point is always important on the hard court, and it is always key to Federer. When he is hitting his first serves with accuracy, he is very tough to beat.
Federer has drilled at least 67 percent of his first serves in all of his matches in this tournament. He has 29 aces in three matches and has won at least 79 percent of his first serve points in those three 2012 U.S. Open matches.
He has nearly double the amount of winners as he does unforced errors and has 13 breaks under his belt.
The only player with a hope of beating Federer is Novak Djokovic, but Federer has beaten him rather convincingly the last two times they have played. He will win his sixth U.S. Open.
