Manchester United: What Does the Future Hold for This Red Devil Squad?

Connor McKnightSep 4, 2012

While Manchester United has officially put last year’s narrow finish to the EPL regular season, the first three games have been relatively surprising for the Red Devils.

Everton shocked everyone with a quick 1-0 victory to kick off the season that featured the debut of recent signee Robin van Persie.

Against Fulham in the Old Trafford opener, the Red Devils edged their opponents 3-2 in a shootout that featured the first United goal from van Persie, as well as a strike from Japanese star and recent addition to the squad Shinji Kagawa. But the loss of Wayne Rooney put a lackluster feel on the victory.

When the Red Devils took the field against the newly promoted Southampton, Manchester United seemed primed for a victory.

But it definitely did not come easily. The squad felt van Persie’s pain in the 69th minute when the Dutch national botched a penalty kick that kept Southampton up 2-1.

The final 20 minutes illuminated van Persie’s brilliance as he notched his first hat trick of the season in a 3-2 victory.

But what does the rest of the season have in store for Manchester United? Is there a Premier League championship in their future? Is this season going to be filled with countless upsets?

No one knows.

With the emergence of van Persie as a goal scorer, United fans eagerly await the return of Wayne Rooney to bring about arguably the most formidable attacking duo in the EPL.

While questions circulate about the defense and even the aging of the midfield, this season will most definitely be full of countless speculations. But the potential for greatness and hardware cannot be ignored.
