Mayhew Fleeces Dallas Cowboys Again, Trades Jon Kitna

Keith SheltonFeb 28, 2009

The Lions have found a team willing to take their trash so to speak and it's none other than the Dallas Cowboys.

They've become Detroit's prime trading partners of late and they've done wonders to settle in new GM, Martin Mayhew.

You might remember back near week six of last season when Mayhew who was newly appointed to the job on an interim basis, traded pacifist Roy Williams to the Cowboys for their first and third round picks.

The deal looked even better than it initially did when Williams didn't put up scorching numbers with the Cowboys.

It was a great start for Mayhew but skepticism remained.

This afternoon, Martin Mayhew called the Cowboys again and traded offcast quarterback Jon Kitna for cornerback Anthony Henry. Before the trade, Henry was still slated to start for the Cowboys on the right side.

However questions were abundant with Kitna. For one, he's way past his prime and is rapidly aging. He was also put on injured reserve which ended his season last year. The fact that Detroit was able to get any value at all for Kitna is nothing short of a miracle.

If anything, I think this speaks to Mayhew's ability. He just fleeced Dallas for a second time.

As recent as two seasons ago, Henry had six interceptions and a touchdown in 13 games with the Cowboys. Last year that total decreased to one, but his tackles doubled and he added two sacks.

At 32, Henry is also five years younger than Kitna.

Fact of the matter is, even if Henry is a complete flop, the Lions still did good. Kitna would have been cut otherwise. Listening to reports out of the team and the media, Kitna was not going to be hanging around.

Mayhew did good here, and deserves to be commended for it. His real test has yet to come though. Let's see how well the new guy drafts before we hang a medal on him. So far though, it looks like Ford may have actually done something right. Could it be?
