Built in 1998 Roger Dean Stadium is a relatively new stadium. Capable of holding 6,871 people Roger Dean has two levels of permanent seating as well as luxury sky-box seating. The Marlins did not call Roger Dean home until Jeffrey Loria bought the team in 2002 and swapped the Marlins spring training location with the then Montreal Expos.

Roger Dean Stadium is unique because it’s the only location in Florida that houses two teams: The Marlins and the Cardinals.

What you need to know about the area

If you are from Florida and are looking to spend a day in Jupiter there is plenty to do in the area. Beautiful beaches are only a short distance from the stadium; some top spots include Jupiter Beach and Ocean Cay which is just a short drive away in Juno Beach.

If you are from out of the area, Jupiter is in the middle of just about everywhere you could wish to go in Florida. If you want to spend a night on South Beach you could surely make the hour and a half drive south after a nice afternoon of baseball.

Or if you want a family afternoon you could take the two hour drive north to visit the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.

If you are willing to drive two and half hours you will find yourself in Orlando surrounded by a plethora of theme parks.

Memorable moments I've had watching the Marlins at Spring Training

I have had two great moments involving Marlins spring training. One time I had caught a Damion Easley home run ball at a Marlins game the previous year when he was Detroit Tiger.

The following year the Marlins acquired him and after a spring training game I got the opportunity to meet him, get him to sign my baseball, and take a picture.

Another great moment would be getting permission from my parents to miss school for a day and go to the Marlins spring opener. There is always a certain buzz when baseball returns and that day everyone in stadium shared in the excitement.

The best way to get autographs there

Here’s the good news, players are much more accommodating in spring training when it comes to signing autographs. Here’s the bad news, you might drive a few hours to the game only to find out Hanley Ramirez is taking the day off. Regardless, the best time to get autographs is either before or after the game.

More players will be around before the game than after and the gates open a hour and a half before so make sure to get there early if your true desire is to get an autograph.

What there is to eat

At the park there are four concession locations you can eat. On the third base side you can find Marlins Fanfare or the Florida Grill. On the first base side you can find the St. Louis Grill or Cardinals Fanfare. All have an array of food that you will be sure to enjoy.

If you do not feel like leaving your seat some items are vended throughout the seats depending on the day.

If you feel like sitting down at a restaurant before or after the game you might want to try Jetty’s which serves steaks and seafood. I have never personally had it but word of mouth rates it high.

Or if you’re a Jimmy Buffet and Alan Jackson fan you can check out the site of their “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” video by stopping by The Square Grouper bar located at Castaways Marina

Where to stay

If you are looking to stay close to the stadium there are several reasonably priced hotels within driving distance. If your budget is a little higher than you might want to consider staying somewhere along the beaches. Your other option is to take a two hour drive north or south and find yourself in Orlando or Miami.

Roger Dean Stadium is a great place to enjoy an afternoon of spring training baseball. Make sure to check it out and enjoy the surrounding area.
