Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Want Schurrle to Replace Sturridge on Deadline Day

Jack Alexandros RathbornJun 7, 2018

Chelsea look set to do some transfer deadline day business after Daniel Sturridge was linked with a move to Liverpool on loan (after they sent Andy Carroll to West Ham on loan), according to ESPN.

Chelsea might be prepared to let Sturridge leave temporarily after adding an assortment of talented forwards that can operate in the same positions as the England international.

As a replacement, the Blues would swoop for Bayer Leverkusen's Andre Schurrle, according to the Daily Mail, with an £18 million fee set to be agreed upon.

The Germany international would be an exciting acquisition for the Blues, fitting the mould that has been coveted for the attacking trio that will support Fernando Torres in Roberto Di Matteo's 4-2-3-1 formation.

The Löwen forward can operate in a more advanced role too, which would provide much-needed cover should Di Matteo feel it necessary for Torres to be rested.

The 21-year-old is an intelligent mover who is able to link between the lines and burst beyond a lone striker. A forward who operates mostly from the left side with his current club, Schurrle was much more mobile at Mainz 05—a role he would likely replicate with the Blues.

Schooled under a new philosophy of attack-minded, technical football in Germany—a style that Roman Abramovich craves—Schurrle's record for Die Mannschaft is superb, scoring seven times in 17 matches.

Having tracked the player for several months, I expect the Blues to jump at the chance to bring in another mercurial talent should the opportunity arise to appease Sturridge's demands for more game time.

This would be a scenario that would suit all parties involved.
