Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman: Why They Make Such a Great Pair

Adam NystromAug 29, 2012

In the world of professional wrestling, gold can be laying in the ground, waiting to be found and revealed to those lucky enough to discover it.

During the 2000 NCAA Championships, the WWE found their jackpot in a Minnesota Golden Gopher.  Brock Lesnar was signed to a professional wrestling contract once he graduated and went on an immediate tear, the likes of which we had never seen.

In less than half a year, Lesnar went from interrupting a hardcore match on Raw to main eventing SummerSlam against The Rock for the WWE Undisputed Championship.  There seemed to be no stopping the monster, and orchestrating his every move was the scientist behind him.

Paul Heyman returned from a bitter wCw/ECW failure at Survivor Series as Lesnar's agent, and the two have been a natural fit ever since.

The pairing of Lesnar and Heyman harkens back to the golden age of managers in professional wrestling, when men like Classy Freddy Blassie, The Grand Wizard, Jim Cornette and Paul E. Dangerously himself would convince everyone watching that their clients were the greatest in the world.

Their wrestlers should be feared, respected and given proper matches and title shots whenever their managers demanded so.

With Lesnar and Heyman, however, Heyman barely needed to say a word.  The mere presence of a monster the size of Brock Lesnar convinced anybody within his long reach that they should watch themselves.  Heyman only served to hammer that point home, but while anybody could have been a mouthpiece for Lesnar, Heyman always had a gift for accentuating each and every positive trait one of his clients possessed.

When Paul Heyman betrayed his client Brock Lesnar in favor of The Big Show and Team Angle, Lesnar was so popular that he no longer needed anyone to explain his actions.  He sought revenge on everyone who double-crossed him, leading to the main event at WrestleMania XIX that unfortunately is more remembered for one failed move instead of the wrestling classic that took place between Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar.

Nine years later, a lot had happened.

Brock Lesnar left the WWE, tried and failed to pursue a career in the NFL, wrestled in New Japan and then became one of the biggest stars in MMA, winning the UFC Heavyweight Championship in the process.  Paul Heyman wrote for SmackDown, helped bring back ECW and subsequently left when he clashed with Vince McMahon over the new direction of the brand.

The two men joined forces again when Heyman collaborated on Lesnar's autobiography "Death Clutch: My Story of Determination, Domination and Survival."

When it was announced that Lesnar had signed a deal with WWE, one of the first things I hoped was that Doctor Frankenstein would be back to work with his creation.

I never would have guessed that it came to fruition, but sure enough, Paul Heyman, acting as Brock Lesnar's legal advisor, came out on WWE TV for the first time in over five years to address the WWE Universe.  This time, Heyman was acting as the representative for a fighter who was hired by an entertainment company.

This pairing of Heyman and Lesnar continues to be perfection.

Despite the fact that Lesnar's career in both wrestling and mixed martial arts has spoken for itself, having Heyman remind us of his accomplishments and dubious intentions makes him all the more frightening.  He has forced John Cena to dig inside himself and become a different kind of person to win a match, and he has forced Triple H to consider calling it a career.

Minutes after I began writing this article, news broke that Floyd Mayweather would be coming back to WWE for WrestleMania XXIX at MetLife Stadium

I am not one to make any sort of prediction, but could we be heading for Mayweather vs. Lesnar in a WWE ring?  If so, expect Paul Heyman to verbally disparage Mayweather in ways only he can.
