Tottenham Transfer Rumors: Andre Villas-Boas to Spend All £30M from Modric Sale

Ryan DayJun 7, 2018

In what looks like a "Hail Mary" in the waning days of the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur Chairman Daniel Levy has reportedly given new manager Andre Villas-Boas the go-ahead to spend all £30 million the club received for selling midfielder Luka Modric to Real Madrid.

According to The Mirror, "Villas-Boas will now use the Modric-generated war-chest to step up his attempts" to sign several much-needed players.

Who's first on Villas-Boas' list before Friday night's transfer deadline? Brazilian forward Willian.

Tottenham made no secret of their interest in Willian, reportedly submitting an £11.8 million bid for the winger that was swiftly rejected by his club, Shakhtar Donetsk. Apparently, the Ukranian club wants somewhere in the ballpark of £20 million for the 24-year-old.

It's no surprise that Tottenham has some gaps in their roster, and nothing is more needed at this point than some firepower on offense. Getting near Shakhtar Donetsk's asking price of £20 million shouldn't be a problem, right?

Wrong.

The Guardian has reported that Tottenham's love affair with Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has only heated up this summer and a bid of £13 million has apparently been accepted by both clubs.

According to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, an agreement has been reached and the decision is now up to Lloris:

""

"I had contact with Daniel Levy on Sunday and the position between the two clubs has got closer. I have told Hugo about the discussions with Tottenham and everything is in his hands. The decision is his."

If this is true, that's huge news for Tottenham fans and eliminates nearly half the war-chest Villas-Boas received from Modric's sale and leaves little more than £17 million for Willian and other players Villas-Boas is courting.

The Mirror has stated that Tottenham are attempting to lure Fulham's star attacking midfielder Moussa Dembele. The only problem is Dembele, potentially Modric's replacement at White Hart Lane, has a £15 million release clause in his contract. Spurs don't have that kind of money.

But they have players.

According to The Mirror, Jermain Defoe has made himself valuable enough this summer and through the first two weeks of the season that he could be offered up as one of several cash players by Tottenham. Villas-Boas would get the "creative midfielder" he's looking for and the war-chest would be empty.

Is a last-ditch spending spree what's best for Tottenham Hotspur? Do you think it's a wise decision to empty the war-chest immediately, or do you think Villas-Boas needs to be a little more patient?
