Little League World Series: Mom Fired After Leaving Job to Watch Son Play

One mom had to choose between seeing her son play in a Little League game with a chance at the World Series on the line or keeping her job. She chose baseball. 

Billie Ann Tomei lost her job when she decided against an ultimatum from her boss and went to see her son Cole play and her husband Trevor Tomei coach in the West Regional tournament in San Bernardino, The Press Democrat (h/t CBS San Francisco, Larry Brown Sports) reports.

Tomei explains that she wasn't allowed time off to see the LLWS berth game in Southern California and was subsequently fired when she went anyway.

"I lost my job during the San Bernardino thing," said Tomei. "He wouldn't let me take time off. He told me, 'If you go, write yourself your last check.' So I wrote myself my last check."

Worth it? Totally. 

Before we start blasting this apparent curmudgeon of a boss, let's acknowledge that we don't know the entire story. 

Of course, one would hope that a workplace would make every last consolation to allow a worker to see their son play in a once in a lifetime event. More so that the worker was also married to the coach.  

But there very well could have been extreme extenuating circumstances. The report issues Tomei had been working as an office manager for a CPA, and her request came at a horrible time when the boss was away and needed her to cover. 

We hope that every last avenue was addressed before an ultimatum of this gravity was given, because the consequence still seems pretty severe.

In the end, we have to say Tomei made a decision that was right by her. 

Petaluma may have fallen just short of reaching the end goal, but the journey is what matters. That the family got to travel together means everything.
