Barclays Golf 2012: Contenders Ready to Strike in the Final Round

Jun 7, 2018

Welcome to Bethpage Black; arguably one of the toughest courses any professional golfer could ever face.

That is where the 2012 Barclays Golf tournament comes from, and that’s where the top players in the world will struggle.

As tough as the course is, there are some stars that will shine through the Black Course and remain within distance for a big Sunday win.

All of the following players have been playing solid enough to stay in contention, but it will be their final assault during Sunday’s final round that could win the tournament.

Rickie Fowler

After an amazing Day 1, Rickie Fowler had a mediocre second round but still finds himself in a solid spot to contend on Sunday.

Despite a 2012 season that has left much to be desired, Fowler is still a dangerous player in any tournament and has been playing great during the Barclays tournament. Add in his knowledge of the course from the 2009 U.S. Open and Fowler is a real contender.

With the hard surfaces of Bethpage Black playing into Fowler’s style, if he can handle the pressure, there is a good chance Fowler could steal the show Sunday.

Phil Mickelson

If there is one star that is more excited than anyone else to see the Bethpage course at the Barclays, it’s tour veteran Phil Mickelson.

It was the 2009 U.S. Open held at the Black Course in which Mickelson won a second-place finish, and his stellar play throughout this weekend lends itself to another spectacular finish.

If Lefty can ride the momentum he created on Saturday, there is little doubt that his experience will keep him on track to contend for a win. Mickelson needs a great round to win, but he has proven that he can’t do it on this stage.

Tiger Woods

While the Tiger Woods of old has yet to return to that form, the new Tiger can be just as dangerous at times.

We found that out during his three tournament wins this season.

Another star that finds the Black Course of Bethpage State Park, Woods has not only played the course many times, but he's had great success. If he can continue to play solid fundamental golf, there is no doubt he will be in contention for the win.

Woods hasn’t showed a really great round yet, but if he is saving his best for last, it may be enough to steal the show and the Barclays win.
