The Doctor's Weekly SmackDown Recap: The 159 Things We Learned, Loved and Hated

The Doctor Chris MuellerJun 7, 2018

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to my weekly SmackDown recap list. I always appreciate my loyal readers, but for those of you who are new, each week I recap SmackDown with a long list.

The entries are made up of equal parts observations, humor, recap, play-by-play, revelations, speculations, questions, answers and anything else I notice during the show. I sometimes comment on commercials, too, just because I get bored during them.

I try and interject some fun into these lists, so I hope you have fun reading this week's list of the 159 things we learned, loved and hated from the show.

1. And we are live (pre-taped) with this week's SmackDown.
2. Randy Orton comes out to start the show and we see a replay of last week where Orton defeated Alberto Del Rio.
3. Orton introduces himself, for some reason, and talks about how he likes confrontation.
4. Orton says he deserves to face Sheamus for the World Championship.
5. He invites anyone who has a problem with this to come out to the ring.
6. Sheamus' music hits and he comes out with a big smile on his face.
7. I would be smiling too if I was on a 14-match winning streak.
8. Sheamus agrees that Orton deserves the next title shot.
9. Sheamus' "take on all challengers"personality is really starting to look like Cena more and more each week.
10. Booker T comes out and says he would love to see that match, but first he wants to talk about what happened on Monday.
11. Del Rio comes out to say he deserves the title shot. Surprise, surprise.
12. ADR does what everyone expects him to do, complain about how he was screwed not once, but twice.
13. Del Rio insults Sheamus in Spanish and some of the people who could understand it in the crowd start laughing.
14. Orton says ADR is embarrassing himself and Del Rio says this is all a conspiracy.
15. I find it funny how Booker says Orton will always be in line for a title shot because of his credentials. We all know that he is always going to be in the title scene, but it is a bit shocking to hear them actually say it on the show.
16. Booker says the winner of Del Rio vs. Orton will get to face Sheamus for the title.
17. There is a formula for how WWE figures out contenders for titles.
18. Step one: Have someone come out and say they deserve a shot.
19. Step two: Have the champion come out and yammer back and forth with this person.
20. Step three: Have a third person join in on the conversation.
21. Step four: Have the GM come out and have the two non-champions face each other for a title shot.
22. We have literally seen this exact scenario about a dozen times in the past year between the WWE and World titles.
23. Ryback Van Dam comes out to face Jinder Mahal after the break.
24. RVD said Ryback reached out to him to see if he could use the same airbrush artist to design his singlets.
25. I wonder if he asked Goldberg if he borrow his gimmick?

Monday Night RAW

26. In all seriousness, I am not a Ryback-hater. I hope he develops into a great talent someday, I just hope WWE doesn't ruin him the way they ruined Brodus Clay.
27. Teddy Long is out for commentary and he says it will be someone different joining Cole for every match.
28. Ryback gives a quick promo before the match where he chants his catchphrase and it looks like the crowd gets into it.
29. Jinder Mahal comes out as we see a replay pf Ryback dispatching Mahal on Monday.
30. Mahal starts off with a headlock but Ryback throws him off with ease in an impressive show of strength.
31. The way Ryback started pounding Mahal in the face afterwards looked more real than most punches we see.
32. Mahal comes back with some offense and hits several knees to Ryback's head to knock him down.
33. Mahal hits a big running knee for the first pin attempt of the match.
34. Mahal kicks Ryback in the face a couple times but Ryback catches the third one and proceeds to throw Mahal straight up in the air.
35. Ryback hits a huge clothesline followed by his finisher for the pin and the win.
36. Some of the things Ryback can do make him look like one of the strongest people on the roster.
37. A promo airs for Saturday Morning Slam. I wonder how much more kid-friendly it is going to be?
38. Diva match sighting!
39. Kaitlyn is out for commentary for the next match.
40. Alicia Fox is in the ring to face Layla.
41. Aren't they both faces? Did they not have a heel they could have face Layla?
42. Foxy Mama starts off with a roll up right away but Layla kicks out.
43. Layla tries her own roll up but the ref doesn't count because one of Fox's shoulders was up.
44. Layla climbs the ropes but Fox kicks out her leg and goes to work on Layla's injured knee.
45. Nice. Fox applies a half-Boston crab.
46. Layla gets out and hits a Chick Kick for the pin and the win.
47. Kaitlyn gets in the ring after the match and hugs Layla, but Eve comes out to break up the party.
48. Okay...
49. All that happened was Eve came down, raised both women's hands and smiled. That was it.
50. I honestly don't know if there was a point to that or if it will lead somewhere, but it came off like the worst planned segment of all time.

51. A really long video for the CM Punk/Jerry Lawler segment from Monday plays and Cole shows some WWE tweets about it.
52. Thank God. We got backstage and Dolph Ziggler is here to save us from what has been a really boring show so far.
53. He runs into Sheamus and Sheamus challenges him to cash in his MITB case.
54. Ziggler says he won't do it, but Teddy Long comes up and says they will have a match anyways.
55. Did they shine a pink light on the walls just because Ziggler wears pink shirts?
56. Sin Cara is out for a match we will see after the break.
57. I wish he would wear red and blue so I could start calling him Spiderman. I am out of other nicknames for him.
58. Cody Rhodes is on commentary as Heath Slater comes out to face Cara.
59. The one man band babayyyyyyy!!!
60. Slater kind of looks like a ginger Edge these days.
61. Sin Cara hits a snapmare early on to take control.
62. Slater dodges a kick and knocks Sin Cara to the floor. He rolls Cara back in for a near fall.
63. Cole asks Rhodes about trying to remove Sin Cara's mask a few times while Cara takes control with some high-flying offense.
64. Slater runs Cara into the ring apron and as he distracts the ref Rhodes comes up and twists Sin Cara's mask around on his head so he can't see.
65. Wow! Heath Slater hits his finisher and wins the match.
66. I don't care if it was dirty, that was Slater's biggest win of the year.
67. After the match, Rhodes tries to get the mask again and he comes really close to pulling it off.
68. The World Champion gets a jobber's entrance for his match with Dolph Ziggler. Hilarious.
69. I know they do that to save time, but it is still funny to me.
70. Vickie mentions how Ziggler got Jericho fired after beating him on Monday.
71. Vickie is on commentary. Where are my earplugs?
72. Sheamus is in control until Ziggler hits a dropkick.
73. Ziggler misses a Fame-asser and Sheamus knocks him out of the ring.
74. Dolph responds with a kick to Sheamus' head followed by a DDT on the apron.
75. Ziggler is single-handedly saving this show for me.

76. Stop looking at Vickie's breasts, Michael Cole!
77. Sheamus hits a side slam and both men try to get back to their feet.
78. Ziggler tries for the sleeper but Sheamus throws him off and hits a series of axe-handles and knees.
79. Sheamus drapes Ziggler over the rope for the Irish Hand Grenades, followed by White Noise.
80. Sheamus sets up for the Brogue Kick and Ziggler goes for his briefcase, which he uses to get disqualified.
81. He wallops Sheamus a second time and then says he wants to cash in his title shot.
82. Sheamus gets back to his feet and Ziggler changes his mind and bails.
83. Of course, the only match I enjoy so far ends in a DQ.
84. Cole hypes ADR vs. Orton for later before heading to break.
85. A spot airs for the WWE App. I wonder if WWE inserted that into the show or paid for actual advertising time during the commercial break?
86. I friggin' love these Wade Barrett video packages.
87. Santino is out next and we see a replay of him losing the United States Championship.
88. Santino says he was champion for 166 days. WWE is really committed to having longer title reigns over this last year.
89. Why does Santino insist on cutting his hair like he is a bad guy from Roadhouse?
90. Sanino pulls out the Cobra sleeve and talks to him.
91. This is ridiculous.
92. Santino says Robert De Niro is Italian. He is actually only 1/4 Italian. I think the rest is Irish and some other European heritages.
93. Never say I don't try and teach you things.
94. Antonio Cesaro is out and he has some new entrance music. It fits him better than the generic rock music he was using.
95. Elvira has Cesaro say winner in five languages.
96. Santino power-walks up the ramp and attacks Cesaro, knocking him down the ramp.
97. The Cobra is distracted by Aksana and Cesaro gets the advantage and attacks.
98. I am all for wild gimmicks, but I hate The Cobra.
99. Commercial. So I saw a trailer for WWE 13 where they showed the whole roster. It looks impressive. A lot of past and present superstars will make it more worth the price.
100. Kofi and Truth are out with Little Jimmy after the break to face Epico and Primo.

101. If they want to rebuild the tag team division, then they need to have more than three teams.
102. Tyler Reks asking for his release did not help matters, but it did help me not have to see male strippers on SmackDown anymore.
103. Prime Time Players are on commentary for this one.
104. Thank God Rosa is back with Primo and Epico.
105. Kofi's attire resembles Superman a little bit. Between him and Rey Mysterio as Batman, they have DC Comics biggest names covered.
106. Epico and Kofi do some nice chain wrestling that ends in both men going for a dropkick.
107. Primo tags in and keeps the pressure on Kofi with a senton from the apron.
108. Titus O'Neil doing a Booker T impression was kind of funny.
109. Truth tags in and goes to work on both opponents for a near fall.
110. Epico takes out Kofi and Truth takes out Epico.
111. Primo can't hit the backstabber and Truth hits the Lie Detector for the pin and the win.
112. Hahaha. Kofi yelling to Titus "You still look like a horse" made me laugh pretty hard.
113. Kofi and Truth are backstage and Titus and Darren walk up and talk some trash.
114. Nice. The Usos walks up and join the party.
115. Holy Crap! Epico and Primo walk up along with Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd.
116. I didn't realize WWE was going to keep Gabriel and Kidd as a team.
117. This makes five teams WWE has now. Hopefully they use them all properly.
118. A big fight breaks out and all 10 men brawl.
119. I think Little Jimmy made it out OK.
120. Cole plugs how they will show a video package for the Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar match after the break.
121. How many points is the word "Redundancy" worth in Scrabble?
122. After the break we see Booker asking Teddy Long who deserves a title shot for the tag titles.
123. Teddy says he isn't sure and Eve brings up some stats for the tag teams as well as a schedule for him.
124. Book seems impressed by her initiative.
125. A video package for the Kane/ Daniel Bryan feud is shown.

126. Then, we get the Lesnar/Triple H video Cole mentioned.
127. I have not even pointed out every time they have shown a video package tonight and I am sure it seems like a lot based on what I am saying.
128. Orton is out for his match with Del Rio before we go to another commercial.
129. When we return we see Sheamus on commentary as Del Rio comes out in a sweet Bentley.
130. Sheamus seems confused by the words "tattle tale."
131. Del Rio gets the early advantage with a shoulder block.
132. Orton avoids Del Rio in the corner and rolls him up for a near fall.
133. Orton slingshots Del Rio into the bottom rope for another near fall.
134. Del Rio gets a kick on Orton's arm, but Orton hits a neckbreaker.
135. ADR rolls out of the ring and Sheamus stands up and stares him down.
136. ADR is still in control when we return from commercial and he is working over the arm setting up for the Cross Arm Breaker.
137. Orton tries to fight back but Del Rio puts him in the corner and hits a nice enzuigiri kick.
138. Orton hits a couple clotheslines and a powerslam to take back control.
139. Orton tries for the rope-hung DDT but Del Rio pulls his arm over the rope.
140. Del Rio rushes Orton but he gets hit with a backbreaker instead.
141. This is by far the best match of the night.
142. Del Rio drops Orton's arm over his knee for a near fall.
143. ADR goes for the CAB, but Orton pushes him off.
144. Del Rio leaps from the middle rope right into a dropkick from Orton for a near fall.
145. Orton is able to hit the rope-hung DDT after Del Rio tries to rush him at the wrong time.
146. Orton sets up for the RKO, but Del Rio grabs the top rope to save himself.
147. ADR locks in the CAB and Orton taps.
148. Wow! Del Rio getting a pretty clean win is somewhat of a surprise, but nice to see.
149. Ha! Del Rio throws Ricardo Rodriguez's shoe at Sheamus and the Irishman goes nuts.
150. Del Rio and Ricky gets the better of Sheamus and ADR knocks Sheamus out with the shoe.
151. Ziggler's music hits and he runs down to the ring to cash in his briefcase.
152. Orton hits him with an RKO to save Sheamus' title.
153. The show ends with Del Rio staring down Sheamus in the ring.
154. That show was pretty weak until the last match.
155. I enjoyed Ziggler's performance, as always, but the ending to his match was not that good.
156. I am glad WWE is putting some more attention on the tag team division lately. but we need some variety.
157. I hope the Usos and Gabriel and Kidd gets some title shots soon.
158. Other than those things, the rest of the show was either boring or painful to watch.
159. Hopefully next week's Raw will redeem what I feel has been a down week in WWE television. I'm going to go watch Ring of Honor to feel better about the wrestling business.

Thanks for reading and please feel free to share your thoughts on SmackDown in the comments section.
