Tiger Woods: Injury in Round 2 at Barclays Precursor to More Painful Days Ahead

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

Tiger Woods is starting to look like an old man out on the course at Bethpage for the Barclays, and he's only just starting to wear down.

This is according to an article by Shane Bacon of CBS Sports, accompanied by a video to prove it:

"

Woods started to wince in his second round of the first FedEx Cup playoff event, grabbing his back and event commenting to his caddie, Joe LaCava, that he felt like LaCava's former boss, Fred Couples (Freddie has always battled with back issues throughout his career).

Woods was able to make the most out of his second round on Friday, despite dealing with a sore back. He shot two under par, improving his score for the tournament to five under par—three shots back of Nick Watney and Sergio Garcia, who sit at eight under par.

Being injured isn't a new thing for Woods. He hasn't been healthy for the past few years, but this is the first time he's having back issues on the course.

But, that's the way it goes for folks like him who've had knee injuries—not to mention his cranky Achilles tendon. As the lower body starts to break down, pain generally starts working its way up the body. Sadly, I know from experience.

Obviously, the biggest goal for Woods going forward is to beat Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major championship victories. Woods has been stuck at No. 14 for four years now—the longest drought of his career.

Just as obvious to me is that Woods still has the game to win majors.

His biggest obstacle for the past few years has been his inability to stay healthy. This will continue to be his biggest challenge going forward, and if Woods doesn't ever reach Nicklaus' mark, it will be because his body failed him.

That said, if Woods manages to overcome his failing body and does achieve his goal, it'll be one of the greatest golf stories ever told.
