CM Punk: Why His DVD/Blu-Ray Documentary Could Be WWE's Best Ever

Sebastian MaldonadoJun 7, 2018

CM Punk claims to be the best wrestler in the world. His upcoming DVD/Blu-Ray documentary “CM Punk: Best In The World” could be the WWE’s best DVD/Blu-ray ever.

That is a huge claim considering the many home video releases by the WWE, including the highly critical The Rise and Fall of ECW.

The WWE also has released many DVDs on wrestlers, but none has ever had the hype as this. This DVD/Blu-ray, which will hit shelves October ninth, promises to be a hit with not just the WWE Universe, but wrestling fans as well.

It makes sense since Punk’s meteoric rise to the top began last year. Many wrestling fans must have wondered Punk’s state of mind during his career at certain moments, especially his promo in Las Vegas last year.

If you look at the road this upcoming release has taken, CM Punk’s documentary promises to be the best one yet.

Trailer Footage

WWE released the official trailer for Punk’s story two weeks ago. It revealed what fans should expect and it looks extremely different from past releases.

The trailer shares similarities with other wrestler-focused documentaries. It plans to show Punk’s family life before wrestling and how he got into the business.

The trailer also revealed video footage from other Independent promotions, specifically the IWA (Independent Wrestling Alliance) and Ring of Honor. Footage from independent wrestling organizations is rare in WWE videos.

The trailer also shows who will be featured on it. It won’t just be Punk but many of his friends currently and formerly in the WWE. It should be intriguing to see what Punk and his peers offer to his story.

Punk's Creative Control

2 of 7

The most interesting factor is Punk’s creative control over the documentary.

This doesn’t seem the norm with most documentaries focused on wrestlers.

Punk revealed on Colt Cabana’s Art of Wrestling Podcast on February 1 he is heavily involved in his DVD.

He told Cabana he’s picking the matches and even the soundtrack. He also said how he wants bands he listens to instead of the music the WWE usually features on their videos.

In an interview with Xfinity Comcast, Punk stated how he put a lot of his energy into the documentary portion and how it’s “raw.”

If Punk’s creative control holds up with the WWE, it should be a unique and personal experience for Punk’s fans and viewers.

Reaction

The reaction should be monumental for wrestling DVDs.

The WWE will venture to a road never before taken by them. According to PWMania.com, the DVD will be screened in a Chicago theater.

This should provide information as to how wrestling fans and the WWE Universe will find Punk’s story and input.

PWMania.com also reported the screening will also feature a panel discussion with some of the interviewed stars in the documentary.

CM Punk said in his interview with Xfinity Comcast he believes it will be the best WWE release and most honest documentary the WWE will release. He revealed to Luis Gomez of the Chicago Tribune that he's seen an early cut, saying it "blew him away."

Punk seemed satisfied with the early cut. Maybe his vision will give the fans the true stories and content they crave.

Independent Footage

Punk wanted his whole story told.

That means he wanted every facet of his career on this DVD/Blu-ray. He managed to get the footage from IWA-Mid South and ROH.

The WWE allegedly paid Sinclair Broadcasting (who owns ROH) and IWA-Mid South owner Ian Rotten an undisclosed amount for Punk’s footage.

It's very unusual when footage from other wrestling promotions outside the WWE is used for their video releases. Showing his time in IWA-Mid South and ROH will show Punk grow not just as a person but also as a wrestler.

Interview Subjects

5 of 7

The list should cover almost everyone Punk knows.

Among the confirmed to appear are his family and friends including Colt Cabana, Rancid band member Lars Frederisken and fellow WWE Superstar Kofi Kingston.

Other names interviewed also worked with Punk at some point, whether on screen or behind the scenes. Paul Heyman, John Cena and Michael P.S. Hayes did interviews for the film. Former WWE wrestler Joey Mercury also discusses his time with Punk.

Punk's ex-girlfriend and former WWE Women's Champion Lita also did an interview for the documentary.

If Punk’s control holds, expect their stories to pull no punches.

Length

6 of 7

Amazon.com has listed Punk’s DVD/Blu-ray at 540 minutes for three discs.

The matches are also listed on the site. They are spread on two discs, with the documentary on one disc.

Among the matches are his coveted WWE Title victory over John Cena in Chicago, his recent matches with Chris Jericho and Daniel Bryan, and his feud with Rey Mysterio.

The Blu-ray features are possibly deleted scenes from the documentary and/or footage from Punk’s career. Some listed include “Hanging with Eddie Guerrero” and “No Microphone.”

Either way, both formats should provide many features for wrestling fans.

Documentary Content

7 of 7

As mentioned earlier, the DVD/Blu-ray should cover CM Punk’s story. That includes his personal life and his upbringing into the wrestling business.

For wrestling fans, they should expect many of Punk’s feelings and thoughts out in the open.

Personally, a topic of interest must be what happened during and after Punk’s “pipe-bomb” heard around the world.

Who wouldn’t want to hear the reactions of his peers and colleagues regarding Punk’s shoot promo? Plus, we might get his opinion on the current state of affairs in the WWE.

Fans will get full access to the current WWE Champion. What more could they want?

CM Punk: Best In The World will be released on DVD and Blu-ray October ninth.
