The 3 Most Underrated Strikes in MMA Today

Anthony FuscoJun 1, 2018

There are conventional weapons in MMA and there are underrated ones. Every fighter knows how to kick, punch and knee.

But there are underrated strikes that if used properly, can produce devastating effects. It’s amazing to think that more fighters don’t use these strikes, as they are excellent weapons every MMA fighter should have.

In the following slides, I give you my picks for three of the most underrated strikes in MMA today.

The Jab

1 of 3

Every fighter knows how to jab. It's fighters who can use the jab effectively who have a very dangerous weapon.

The jab is primarily used as a distance strike. But Georges St. Pierre used it for more than that in his second fight with Josh Koscheck.

St. Pierre flashed a lighting quick jab with bad intentions behind it and he used it to brutalize Koscheck's eye to the point of it being swollen shut.

It was later found out to be a broken orbital bone. Give the jab a chance and it can do some serious damage.

The Body Punch

2 of 3

This truly is one of the most underrated strikes today. It confuses me why more fighters don't use it.

The body punch has been used to great effect in MMA fights today. It may not stop a fighter on the first strike, but it definitely wears on a fighter.

Keep getting hit with those and eventually it's game over. Just ask Justin Lawrence.

Two of the best body punchers in the UFC today are easily Fabio Maldonado and Max Holloway.

Watch either of their most recent fights and you will see the true power of the body punch.

Standing Elbow Strikes

3 of 3

I don't believe standing elbows are used enough in MMA competition today. If you've ever watched a Muay Thai fight, elbows are as popular as the punches, knees and kicks.

Standing elbow strikes are a dangerous strike that can pay great dividends if you know how to use them properly.

In the UFC, look at Light-Heavyweight champion Jon Jones. His elbows are some of the most dangerous in MMA today.

If you want more, take a look at Canadian Nick Denis and his UFC debut. He managed to KO Joseph Sandoval just 22 seconds in with vicious standing elbows.

One more example is now retired UFC fighter Kenny Florian. He won a TKO due to doctor stoppage over Alex Karalexis in large part because of a nasty cut his standing elbows inflicted.

If you have other examples of underrated strikes, shoot me a comment.
