5 NFL Teams That Are the Best Fit for Maurice Jones-Drew

Gordie GoldJun 3, 2018

If the New England Patriots had a top-five running back in the NFL, could their offense ever be stopped?

Chances are, it couldn't.

A playmaker like Maurice Jones-Drew puts fear into an opposing team's defense. MJD can take over a game whether he is running over people or catching screen passes out of the backfield.

With the trade speculation heating up about Jones-Drew, here are five NFL teams that would be the best for MJD.

New York Jets

1 of 5

With no legit starting quarterback and the fact that Shonn Greene has underachieved ever since his impressive rookie year, the New York Jets need to get a stud offensive weapon to build around.

Maurice Jones-Drew would be able to take pressure off of Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.

We know how much love Rex Ryan loves the ground-and-pound style of offense, and there is no better running back to do that with than MJD. Not only could you give MJD 20 carries a game, but he is one of the best receiving running backs in the NFL. This would give Sanchez and Tebow a check-down target that could turn a potential dead play into a first down or more.

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots have always been a team revolved around Tom Brady and the passing game, but imagine how much better they would be if they had Maurice Jones-Drew as their running back.

Just try comparing Stevan Ridley, Danny Woodhead or Shane Vereen to Jones-Drew. Those three running backs should never be mentioned in the same sentence as MJD.

Opposing defenses could no longer try to force the Patriots to run the ball because MJD would shred them apart. Not only would their running game be tremendously improved, but MJD would give Brady another stud receiving target.

If the Patriots were to make a move for MJD, they would instantly become the Super Bowl favorites.

Pittsburgh Steelers

3 of 5

When it comes to AFC North football, you have to be able to play a smash-mouth style of football.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have solid running backs in Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman, but they could do better. Mendenhall is coming off of a severe knee injury, and his days as a Steeler appear to be limited. Redman filled in well for Mendenhall last year, but he is not proven and has been a backup running back his entire career.

A running back like Maurice Jones-Drew would give the Steelers' the most balanced offense in the NFL. With Ben Roethlisberger throwing to Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown and MJD carrying the ball, the Steelers would have a great chance of taking control of the AFC North from the Baltimore Ravens.

Washington Redskins

Ever since Mike Shanahan took over as head coach for the Washington Redskins, they have used a plethora of running backs. Whether it has been Clinton Portis, Ryan Torain, Tim Hightower, Roy Helu or Evan Royster, none of them have been able to keep the starting job for an entire season.

The Redskins traded away all their draft picks for Robert Griffin III, but if they could figure out how to get Maurice Jones-Drew, there would be no more starting running back controversy. MJD would not only be their best offensive weapon, but he would take a significant amount of pressure off of RG3 in his rookie season.

Denver Broncos

5 of 5

With Peyton Manning already heading to the Denver Broncos this offseason, the addition of Maurice Jones-Drew would put them over the top.

Willis McGahee had a solid season in 2011, but he has been in the league for awhile now, and his best days are behind him. A running back like MJD would make the Broncos an instant Super Bowl contender.

This team went to the playoffs and won a game last year with Tim Tebow leading it. Imagine what it would do with Manning and MJD running the show.
