WWE SummerSlam 2012: Dolph Ziggler's Loss Proves WWE Won't Push Young Star

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Dolph Ziggler is the kind of wrestler WWE should be building around. He is one of the best in-ring performers the company has, and he is improving on the microphone. Unfortunately, SummerSlam was a telling sign that WWE is not going to give him the true push he needs.

Some fans might say that Ziggler has already gotten a push since he is carrying around a Money in the Bank briefcase and has worked in title matches this year with CM Punk and Sheamus.

While those are valid points, you have to look at the context more than just the match itself. The title match with CM Punk at the Royal Rumble was basically Punk defeating Ziggler four different times before the match ended.

The title match with Sheamus came after Alberto Del Rio was injured, not to mention the countless times that Sheamus actually beat Ziggler clean before WWE decided to make that match.

Winning a Money in the Bank briefcase isn't always a sign that the company is getting behind you. Wrestlers like Jack Swagger, Kane and Miz have all won the briefcase in the past. Look where those three are right now.

Ziggler losing to Chris Jericho at SummerSlam was not a surprise. WWE built that entire match around Jericho being unable to win, so he was always going to come out on top.

But then the next night on Raw made things even worse. WWE had to write Jericho out of the company since he was going to be leaving, so the company decided a rematch with Ziggler was an appropriate way to handle things.

This time, Ziggler got the victory. What good does that do? Everyone knows Ziggler just got beat the day before and has been jobbing to all the top guys for the last year.

If WWE wanted to push Ziggler, just have him go over on one of the biggest pay-per-view events of the year. That would say something more to people than just a win on Raw the day after he lost to the same person.

WWE is never going to give Ziggler the push he deserves. SummerSlam was proof positive that he is always going to be the guy used to get top stars over instead of them being used to help him become a bigger star.
